Sofia Vergara Steals the Spotlight Next to Anakin and Obi-Wan at the Lucas Museum in a Red Hot Dress

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art has officially opened its doors in Los Angeles, and the star-studded celebration gave fans plenty to talk about. Among the biggest moments was an unexpected Star Wars photo featuring Modern Family and Griselda star Sofia Vergara standing beside a display of Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Wearing a shimmering red gown, Vergara instantly stood out against the familiar Star Wars setting.

The photo was taken during the museum’s opening celebration on September 19, one day before the public opening. Vergara posed in front of a yellow airspeeder display featuring Anakin and Obi-Wan, creating a striking mix of Hollywood glamour and Star Wars nostalgia. The image quickly made its way around social media, with Star Wars fans taking notice of the unusual but fun pairing.

The Lucas Museum is the result of a long-running project led by George Lucas and his wife, Mellody Hobson. Located in Los Angeles’ Exposition Park, the museum covers around 300,000 square feet and is designed to explore the many ways people have told stories through images. Architect Ma Yansong of MAD, working with Stantec, designed the building, which has a large curved shape inspired by a cloud.

Star Wars naturally has a place inside the museum, although it is far from the only attraction. According to CNN, the franchise takes up only around 7 percent of the museum. That means visitors expecting an entire building dedicated to George Lucas’ famous galaxy may be surprised by just how much else there is to explore.

Still, the Star Wars section is one of the major attractions. The museum’s opening Cinema installation, titled Star Wars in Motion, focuses on vehicles from the first six movies. The collection includes everything from Luke Skywalker’s Landspeeder from A New Hope to vehicles connected to Revenge of the Sith.

The exhibition also features two airspeeders from Attack of the Clones, which appear to be moving behind one another. The setup uses blurred imagery in the background to create the feeling of motion, giving the display a different look from a standard museum exhibit.

The collection comes largely from the Lucas Archives, which became a major part of the museum’s foundation after Lucas donated props, costumes and artwork in 2013. Visitors can also see artwork from other parts of film history, as well as comics, photography and famous works by artists such as Frida Kahlo and Norman Rockwell.

The opening celebration itself was almost as star-packed as the exhibits. Harrison Ford was seen sharing a moment with George Lucas, while Mark Hamill posed in front of a Luke Skywalker display. Hayden Christensen, who played Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, was also among the guests.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that Oprah Winfrey and Samuel L. Jackson helped introduce an immersive drone show during the event. The performance filled the sky with Star Wars imagery and other artwork connected to the museum. Steven Spielberg, Greta Gerwig, Guillermo del Toro, Pharrell Williams and Lewis Hamilton were also listed among the event’s co-chairs.

Vergara was joined at the celebration by several other major names, including Kerry Washington, Eva Longoria and Tyler Perry. Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Christopher Nolan, Kim Kardashian and Alicia Keys were also reportedly in attendance, while the Black Eyed Peas performed during the evening.

The museum officially opened to the public on September 22. According to Explore, general timed-entry tickets cost $25. More than 1,300 objects are expected to be on display across the museum’s galleries, giving visitors plenty to see beyond Star Wars.

For fans of the franchise, though, the chance to see iconic costumes, artwork and vehicles in person is likely to be a major draw. Vergara’s photo with Anakin and Obi-Wan has already given the museum another fun viral moment, proving that even before most visitors stepped inside, the Lucas Museum was already getting people talking.
