MCU Star Kit Harington Signals He’s Finally Open to Revisiting Jon Snow Spinoff
For years, Kit Harington has treated the idea of a Jon Snow follow-up series like a door he’d rather keep shut. The actor spent a full decade inside the ‘Game of Thrones‘ universe, and by the time the show wrapped in 2019, he made it clear he needed serious distance from the character that defined his career.
That distance showed in just how firmly he shut things down whenever the spinoff came up. Development on a Jon Snow-centered project, reportedly titled ‘Snow,’ had been underway at HBO as early as 2022, with George R.R. Martin involved in early discussions, but the concept was eventually deemed too bleak to pursue and quietly shelved by 2024. Harington himself has been blunt about walking away from it in the past, at one point flatly telling reporters he didn’t want to go anywhere near a continuation.
Now, though, his tone has shifted. Harington says he’s finally ready to revisit the character, explaining that after stepping back and working on other projects, his relationship with Jon Snow’s world has changed. “After a little while of thinking about it, it kind of was me. I said, ‘This isn’t quite the right story,'” he said, before adding, “now I’ve gone and done all these other things and now I feel more comfortable with that character and that world again and where it sits in my life.”
That reflection lines up with how deliberately Harington and HBO have approached the project from the start. He’s previously described being “very insistent at the start” alongside HBO and Martin that the show only move forward “if we don’t find the right thing,” rather than rush a follow-up just to capitalize on nostalgia. That caution is part of why the original pitch, reportedly centered on a psychologically shattered Jon Snow discarding Longclaw and turning his back on Ghost, never made it past the drawing board.
The renewed appetite comes as HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’ universe has kept expanding successfully elsewhere, with both ‘House of the Dragon’ and ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ finding audiences and giving the network fresh confidence in spinoff storytelling. Reports have also pointed to writer Quoc Dang Tran, known for ‘Drops of God’ and ‘Call My Agent!,’ being attached to a reworked version of the project, with speculation that the story could shift toward Essos and potentially fold in Arya Stark.
None of that means a Jon Snow series is officially back in active production, and Harington’s comments stop well short of confirming he’s signed on for anything specific. But after years of firmly closing the door, an actor saying he now feels comfortable with the character again is a meaningfully different tone than the flat refusals fans have heard before.
Given how cautious both Harington and HBO have been about getting this right, any real movement forward would likely still take time to materialize into something concrete. For now, the most fans have is a more open Kit Harington and a world that clearly still has room left to explore.
