After ‘Reacher,’ Spinoff ‘Neagley’ Gets an Early Renewal Too For Season 2

Few Prime Video series have been as reliable as ‘Reacher.’ Since it launched in 2022, the Alan Ritchson-led action drama has reportedly reached more than 200 million viewers worldwide. Its fourth season alone pulled in 66 million viewers globally in its first 28 days, surpassing the third season’s performance.

That strength has translated into a steady stream of early pickups. Prime Video renewed ‘Reacher’ for Season 5 in May, before Season 4 even debuted, and then announced a sixth season on Monday, just under two weeks after the Season 4 finale. It is the first time the show has received two renewals in the same year, and Season 5 only began production in late July in Toronto.

Now the franchise’s offshoot is getting the same treatment. According to Deadline, Amazon followed up the ‘Reacher’ news by bringing back its spinoff, ‘Neagley’, for a second season. The series stars Maria Sten as Frances Neagley and was renewed just two weeks after the show dropped all of its episodes.

The numbers back up the decision. ‘Neagley‘ debuted on Prime Video on September 16, the same day as the ‘Reacher’ Season 4 finale, and Amazon says the first season reached 40 million viewers in its first 13 days. The company does not define how it calculates viewership, but it adds that the show is the fourth most-viewed original series debut in Prime Video history, with 52% of its viewership coming from outside the US.

‘Neagley’ Just Did the Unthinkable and Dethroned ‘Reacher’ on Prime Video’s Charts

Season 1 follows Sten’s Neagley after she learns that a beloved friend from her past was killed in a suspicious accident, and she becomes hell-bent on justice. As a private investigator in Chicago, she uncovers what may be a conspiracy involving a pharmaceutical company and a black market operation run through an apparent commune. The story draws on her history as Reacher’s protégé in the Army and as a member of the 110 Special Investigators.

Sten leads a cast that also includes Greyston Holt, Adeline Rudolph, Jasper Jones, Matthew Del Negro and Damon Herriman. Ritchson makes a guest appearance as Jack Reacher, though his role in the first season was only a cameo. That is a notable choice, since the series is built to stand on its own rather than lean on its parent show.

Amazon MGM Studios’ head of global television, Peter Friedlander, said audiences worldwide have embraced Frances Neagley as a force in her own right. He praised Sten’s layered and commanding performance, and he credited creators Nick Santora and Nicholas Wootton for building a world that is both thrilling and compelling. He added that Amazon looks forward to continuing the story with its partners at Paramount Television Studios.

Santora and Wootton serve as co-showrunners and executive produce alongside Lee Child, Don Granger, Sam Hill, Adam Higgs and Lisa Kussner. The show is based on a character from Child’s Jack Reacher novels and is produced by Paramount Television Studios and Amazon MGM Studios. Santora also developed ‘Reacher’ and serves as its showrunner.

The renewal raises some obvious questions for Season 2. The Season 1 ending left the door open for the character to return, and viewers will want to know how intertwined her story becomes with the main series. With ‘Reacher’ now renewed through Season 6, Santora may be able to give both Sten and Ritchson more screen time in their respective shows.

For now, Amazon is clearly betting that the universe can keep expanding. Two renewals in a matter of days suggest that the studio sees ‘Reacher’ and ‘Neagley’ as complementary pieces of the same franchise rather than competitors.
