The question of who killed Wendy hung over the third outing of ‘Reasonable Doubt’ like a storm cloud. Jax Stewart, played by Emayatzy Corinealdi, took on the case of child star Ozzie Edwards, who was accused of killing his girlfriend Wendy, played by Rumer Willis. Along the way there were plenty of jaw-dropping revelations about Ozzie and the people enabling him, and everyone was trying to work out whodunit.

The finale finally answered it, and the culprit was not the person most viewers expected. If you have been searching for who killed Wendy on ‘Reasonable Doubt’, here is how the truth came out and why it landed with such force.

How Sal Killed Wendy

The answer is that Sal, played by Keith Arthur Bolden, shot Wendy and then suffocated her after she promised to tell Ozzie about his family’s sinister ways. His daughter Kristen, played by Kiah Clingman, was not the killer, she was simply the person Sal needed to help him finish the job.

The sequence of that night was pieced together in the finale. After a fight with Ozzie, Wendy went to Sal’s home to threaten to expose the family and everything they had done, and during a heated exchange she spat on him. Wendy escaped and Sal shot her, but she was still alive after the first bullet, so he tracked her down in the woods and finished her off.

There was also an ugly choice at the center of it. One recap suggests that if Wendy had accepted his offer to take his money and walk away from their lives, Sal might never have killed her. Afterward he reportedly asked Kristin to clean up and leave nothing behind that could damage the family’s reputation.

Why Ozzie Edwards Looked Guilty

For most of the season the evidence pointed straight at Ozzie Edwards. Door camera footage of his heated argument with Wendy hurt his case, and the bullet that killed her came from a gun registered in his name. He was arrested at the end of the second episode and charged with second degree murder.

The fight itself had a clear trigger. Ozzie’s parents told him certain things that made him feel he had to ask Wendy to sign an NDA, and she accused them of trying to brainwash him. After that night Wendy could not be found, and Ozzie was the last person known to have seen her.

Ozzie’s own memory made things murkier. Late in the season he asked Kristin whether he could have killed Wendy, as if he truly did not remember what happened that night. Viewers were left asking whether he had actually done it without knowing.

The ‘Reasonable Doubt’ Finale Twist

Jax spent the trial dismantling the prosecution’s story. Her talent for finding logical flaws in witness testimony helped her plant reasonable doubt in the minds of the jury. She even exposed Wendy’s assistant, who had her own agenda and wanted to take over Wendy’s clients.

The trial ended the way Jax hoped. Ozzie was found not guilty. Then, at Ozzie’s repass, his sister Kristin revealed that their father was the one who actually killed Wendy.

The confession itself was a trap. Kristin got Sal to confess, and Jax and the police were listening through a hidden cell phone, which led to Sal’s arrest for murder. One recap notes that Jax figured out it was Sal fairly quickly.

Why the Creator Chose Sal

The showrunner has spoken about the decision. In a chat with Variety, Raamla Mohamed explained how Sal became Wendy’s killer and why she made Ozzie’s overdose his final fate. She described Sal as a man who had been emasculated, and she wanted to see what happened when Wendy confronted him.

Ozzie’s ending was grim in its own right. After being cleared, Ozzie met his fate while chasing one last high. That outcome, as outlined by TheWrap, gave the story a bleak edge even after the verdict.

The warnings were there before the finale aired. McKinley Freeman, who plays Jax’s husband Lewis, teased that anyone who thinks they know everything about this world actually knows nothing. The series has also been renewed for another season.

What Comes After the Killer Reveal

The reveal did not close the book on danger for Jax. The finale ends with Monica, played by Brandee Evans, firing a shot at Jax, her family and her friends. Whether Lewis and Jax survived the attack remains an open question until the show returns.

Jax also finishes the season on a new path. She embarks on a journey with her own firm. After a season of courtroom chess and family secrets, that cliffhanger leaves the ‘Reasonable Doubt’ story wide open.

Now that Sal has been unmasked as the killer and Monica has fired that terrifying shot, do you think Jax and Lewis walk away from it, and was Ozzie ever really going to get a happy ending?
