Why Matt Damon Skipped Ben Affleck’s ‘Animals’ and Who Took His Place

If you have been waiting for Matt Damon to turn up in Ben Affleck’s new Netflix thriller, you will be waiting a long time. The reason Matt Damon is not in ‘Animals‘ has nothing to do with a Hollywood feud. The plan was for Affleck to direct, Damon to headline, and both to produce, but Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ got in the way.

That scheduling clash set off a chain reaction behind the camera and in front of it. Affleck ended up stepping into the part himself, and a few other casting surprises followed. Here is the full story of how the Matt Damon exit reshaped one of Netflix’s buzziest thrillers.

Why Matt Damon Exited ‘Animals’ for ‘The Odyssey’

Variety reported that Damon had to leave the starring role because of scheduling conflicts with Nolan’s epic ‘The Odyssey’. It was a simple case of two big projects wanting the same actor at the same time. When one of them is a Christopher Nolan film, the choice is not hard to guess.

The timing was already tricky. According to Deadline, Affleck had planned to shoot ‘Animals’ earlier, but production was delayed to resolve script rights issues, which led him to make ‘The Accountant 2’ first. By the time Affleck was ready to restart, Damon had already committed to ‘The Odyssey’ and could not return to the cast.

Anyone hoping for a story about a falling out will be disappointed. The reporting points to a calendar problem and nothing more. The two friends even shot the Netflix action thriller ‘The Rip’ together in early 2026.

How Ben Affleck Stepped Into the Lead Role

Rather than recasting, Affleck, who was initially set only to direct, decided to star in the film himself. The part he took over is Mark Kimball, a role first reserved for Damon.

Affleck could not resist poking fun at his old pal. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he joked that Matt was busy doing another lesser film with ‘The Odyssey’. It is exactly the kind of teasing you would expect from two friends who have been trading barbs for decades.

The story itself is a tense one. The film follows a mayoral candidate and his wife who must get their hands dirty to save their kidnapped son while surrounded by enemies from the political world and beyond. The script was originally written by Connor McIntyre and then rewritten by Billy Ray.

The supporting cast also helps soften the loss of Damon. Gillian Anderson was cast opposite Affleck, and Netflix announced that Steven Yeun and Kerry Washington had joined as well.

The Jennifer Garner Casting Twist

Here is where the story gets a little awkward. Affleck had intended to cast his ex-wife Jennifer Garner as Damon’s on-screen wife. That would have been a fun bit of Hollywood trivia on its own.

Production schedule changes made it impossible for both Garner and Damon to participate, which forced Affleck to recast the roles. Once Affleck decided to play the lead, he faced the odd prospect of acting as half of a married couple with his own ex-wife, and Garner reportedly feared it would be a distraction.

The solution turned out to be a strong one. Kerry Washington ultimately took the role instead. Audiences get a fresh pairing, and Affleck avoids what could have been a very strange set.

What Damon Still Brings to ‘Animals’ Behind the Scenes

Damon is not completely missing from the project. He remains on board as a producer, working once more with Affleck and Dani Bernfeld through their Artists Equity studio. He co-produced the film with his wife Luciana Damon, along with Affleck, Brad Weston, Dani Bernfeld and Collin Creighton.

That fits the long history between the two. The pair won an Academy Award for co-writing ‘Good Will Hunting’ in 1998, and Damon also starred in Affleck’s directorial effort ‘Air’. Even when Damon is off screen, the partnership clearly keeps humming along.

As for when you can watch it, ‘Animals’ is set to arrive on Netflix on October 9, with a limited theatrical release as well. Affleck has already joked that Damon will get his karma for choosing the Nolan film. So would Damon have played Mark Kimball differently, and does Affleck’s turn in the role make you glad things worked out this way, because we would love to hear your take in the comments.
