A good red carpet pairing is all about contrast, and Andrew Garfield and Monica Barbaro delivered it in style. One arrived in rich, earthy tones, the other in shimmering ice-blue sequins, and together they made one of the most photographed moments at this year’s London Film Festival. The night also served as a victory lap for a film that has had a famously bumpy road.

Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Artificial‘ follows the dramatic days when OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was fired and reinstated in 2023, and the film unfolds over two decades. Amazon MGM Studios dropped it in June, and Neon rescued the project after other distributors reportedly passed. It premiered at the New York Film Festival on October 5 before heading across the Atlantic for its UK debut.

On Sunday, October 11, Garfield and Barbaro arrived at the Royal Festival Hall for the film’s gala screening at the 70th BFI London Film Festival. Both stars posed for photographers on the red carpet, joined by Guadagnino, Yura Borisov, Ike Barinholtz and Mark Rylance. It was the first time the cast of the Oscar-hopeful drama had appeared together in London.

Garfield went for a relaxed, tailored look in warm olive and brown tones. He wore a textured khaki-green blazer over an olive shirt, dark trousers and black leather loafers, with his hair worn longer and tousled. The outfit felt confident but easygoing, with none of the stiffness of a typical formal premiere.

Barbaro chose the opposite palette. She wore a shimmering ice-blue sequin midi dress with thin straps and a ruffled hem, paired with shimmering strappy heels and loose, wavy hair. The metallic fabric caught the light along the red carpet, and the movement from the ruffled hem added a playful finish.

The two looks complemented each other without matching. They have a history of coordinating, having worn matching Ralph Lauren whites to Wimbledon, where they have been seen together in both 2025 and 2026. This time the contrast worked even better.

Garfield is no stranger to memorable London Film Festival appearances. For a past premiere of ‘We Live in Time,’ he famously arrived with a cardboard cutout of co-star Florence Pugh tucked under his arm, since she couldn’t attend. He has also returned to the festival for ‘After the Hunt,’ another Guadagnino film.

This year, the vibe was more polished but just as relaxed. Garfield and Barbaro were first linked in February 2025 after attending a play in London, and they are now widely reported to be a couple. Garfield has also spoken warmly about her talent while promoting the film.

The carpet appearance also came with notable comments about the film. Garfield plays Altman, and in an interview with Variety he said, “I’m still deeply curious about Sam, he’s unfolding before our eyes as we speak and it’s kind of endlessly fascinating, like AI itself I guess.” He has also said he did not meet or contact Altman while preparing.

Garfield told reporters that curiosity and fear drew him to the story, and that he wanted to understand the people ushering the world into its next phase. He previously starred in ‘The Social Network,’ the 2010 Facebook origin film, which gives the project a fitting echo. Barbaro plays Mira Murati, OpenAI’s former technology chief.

The film arrives in US theaters on Christmas Day through Neon, and UK and Irish audiences can see it on January 22, 2027. Early reaction from the London gala has already sparked Oscar chatter for Garfield. For Barbaro, it’s her third release of 2026 after ‘Crime 101’ and ‘One Night Only.’

With the awards race heating up, expect this duo to keep showing up on red carpets. If the response at the Royal Festival Hall is any sign, ‘Artificial’ has found a very enthusiastic audience.
