Few TV shows captured the pop culture imagination of the ’90s quite like ‘Baywatch‘. The original series ran for 11 seasons from 1989 to 2001, starring David Hasselhoff as lifeguard Mitch Buchannon alongside Pamela Anderson and a rotating beach-ready cast, and it later became ‘Baywatch: Hawaii’ after a setting change and major cast overhaul.

Now Fox is bringing it back. The network greenlit a reimagined ‘Baywatch’ in September 2025 as part of its 2026-2027 season, and it was ordered straight to series with 12 episodes. It is co-produced by Fox Entertainment and Fremantle, with Matt Nix of ‘Burn Notice’ and ‘The Gifted’ serving as showrunner and McG directing the premiere.

The new version keeps the family connection at its core. Stephen Amell, known for ‘Arrow’ and ‘Heels’, plays Hobie Buchannon, the once-wild son of Mitch, who is now a Baywatch captain. His world is turned upside down when Charlie Vale, played by Jessica Belkin, the daughter he never knew, arrives at his door hoping to become a lifeguard.

Fox dropped the first full trailer on Tuesday, Oct. 13, and it delivers exactly what fans expect. It opens with the lifeguards saving the day after an airplane flying a message crashes into two people parasailing. It also gives the first glimpse of the franchise’s signature slow-motion shots as the team sprints into the water.

The spot closes with Hassie Harrison’s Nat telling Hobie that they have the best job in the world, something they agree on. Fox says the series premieres in January 2027, and the trailer leans heavily on the franchise’s trademark red swimsuits.

Two of the cast members drawing the most attention are Livvy Dunne and Brooks Nader. Dunne, a former LSU gymnast who rose to fame as a social media star, is making her professional acting debut as junior lifeguard Grace. Nader plays Selene, a Zuma Beach lifeguard who is Hobie’s adversary.

The first footage actually surfaced in May, when Amell shared a short teaser on Instagram captioned “I dream in slow motion.” That clip featured Nader striding down a dock in the classic firehouse-red one-piece, Dunne in matching lifeguard gear and Amell sprinting across the sand with a rescue buoy. The promo teased the tagline “same beach, new blood.”

Filming began in the spring at Venice Beach and on the historic Fox lot in West Los Angeles, and the cast was photographed in their red swimsuits on the first day of shooting. Fox and Fremantle also held an open casting call in Marina Del Rey in February to fill roles from series regulars to walk-ons.

Nader said she had been keeping a secret before announcing she was in the series with a photo of herself holding the script. Page Six reported in March that she had been religiously training to wear the iconic suit. Dunne also shared her excitement about joining the show on Instagram.

The rest of the ensemble includes Shay Mitchell of ‘Pretty Little Liars’, Noah Beck and Thaddeus LaGrone. Harrison, best known for ‘Yellowstone’, plays Nat, a former Olympic athlete with a difficult past who serves as Hobie’s right hand. The series also looks to honor its past, with original stars David Chokachi returning as Cody Madison and Erika Eleniak as Shauni McClain.

That mix of legacy and new talent seems to be a core part of Fox’s strategy. At the network’s upfront presentation, Fox’s president described the project as a top priority, and the network appears to be betting heavily on both nostalgia and the social media reach of its younger stars.

The challenge for the reboot is balancing a ’90s beach fantasy with modern audiences. The show promises the dramatic rescues, complicated relationships and beach heroics that defined the original, but with a new cast and more contemporary tensions. The trailer suggests that the slow-motion running isn’t going anywhere, and that the show isn’t shy about leaning into its own legacy.

For Dunne, the series is a major step beyond her previous screen work, which includes Prime Video’s documentary series ‘The Money Game’ about NIL in college sports. For Nader, it’s another high-profile moment after her modeling career. Whether the show lands depends on how audiences respond when it arrives in January.
