‘Blonde’ Star Ana de Armas Plunges Into the Academy Museum Gala in Black Velvet, and Nobody Is Breathing Normally
Some red carpets are built for drama, and the Academy Museum Gala is near the top of the list. Dubbed the “Met Gala of the West,” the fundraiser for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has become a showcase for runway-fresh fashion right after Fashion Month. By the time Ana de Armas’s Academy Museum Gala look arrived, the bar was already set very high.
The sixth annual edition took place on October 17 in Los Angeles. Charlize Theron was honored with the Icon Award, Colman Domingo with the Vantage Award and John Carpenter with the Luminary Award, while Taylor Swift was set to perform. The evening was presented by Rolex and co-chaired by Robert Rodriguez, Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw.
Then de Armas stepped in front of the cameras in a strapless black velvet gown with a sculpted sweetheart bodice. The neckline plunged into a sheer panel at the center, and the fitted silhouette flowed into a voluminous mermaid skirt that pooled dramatically around her feet.

In the carpet clip, she stands against softly draped curtains with both hands planted on her hips, letting the sweep of the skirt do the talking. The velvet absorbs the light while the sheer panel cuts a daring line down the middle, which is exactly the kind of contrast that makes a look hard to look away from.
The styling stays sleek. Her brunette hair falls straight past her shoulders, and a sparkling statement necklace adds a flash of shine against the dark fabric. It all adds up to a confident return to timeless elegance rather than a trend-chasing experiment.

This is far from her first black gown. At the 2025 Oscars, she wore a black column gown with a silver halter neckline, paired with a diamond ring and earrings. She was presenting that night, returning to the ceremony after her 2023 nomination for ‘Blonde’.

In January, she presented at the 2026 Golden Globes in a custom black Louis Vuitton gown with a glittering finish and a thigh-high slit. Later that night, she changed into a sheer black lace Louis Vuitton gown with floral detailing over a nude base for an after-party. The pattern is clear: when de Armas goes dark, she goes dramatic.

Her fashion run has been closely tied to Louis Vuitton for some time. The label made the custom gown she wore to the ‘Ballerina’ premiere in Paris, a strapless corseted design with a black satin bodice and a column skirt covered in three-dimensional ivory blooms.
That kind of consistency is a big part of why her carpet moments keep landing. She has a recognizable taste for sculptural shapes and strong contrasts, and each new look builds on the last.

The fashion visibility comes with a packed slate behind it. After starring in ‘Ballerina’, the first major spinoff of the ‘John Wick’ franchise, she is attached to several upcoming projects. These include the sci-fi horror film ‘Deeper’ with Tom Cruise, directed by Doug Liman, and the psychological thriller ‘Sweat’, in which she plays a fitness influencer.
She is also set to star opposite Sebastian Stan in the espionage thriller ‘Impunity’ and alongside Benicio Del Toro and Cameron Diaz in ‘Reenactment’, which is in post-production. On television, she is lined up for the Apple TV+ series ‘Bananas’ with Oscar Isaac.
That range, from action to thrillers to prestige TV, helps explain why every appearance feels like an event. Her gala look made clear she is as comfortable on a carpet as she is on a set.
Plenty of gowns get attention, but few manage to feel both classic and daring at once. The deep velvet, the sheer center panel and that exaggerated mermaid train give it a cinematic quality that suits a night built around film.
It also fits the gala’s own spirit. The event rewards big swings, and de Armas swung big while keeping the styling clean.
