Sofía Vergara has been on a serious red carpet run this year. She wore a custom Zuhair Murad gown with Lorraine Schwartz jewelry to the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in March. More recently, she walked the 78th Emmy Awards in a custom Laura Basci strapless mermaid gown covered in sequins, lace embroidery and sheer illusion panels.

So her arrival at the Academy Museum Gala came with high expectations. The event is often called the Met Gala of the West, and the 2026 edition was packed with sculptural couture. Fresh-off-the-runway fashion tends to be the point, since the gala lands right after the worldwide fashion weeks.

The 6th annual gala took place Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles. Charlize Theron received the Icon Award, Colman Domingo the Vantage Award and John Carpenter the Luminary Award, with Rolex presenting and Robert Rodriguez, Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw co-chairing. Among the guests who turned out, Vergara delivered one of the most talked-about looks of the night: a floral couture gown that turned the carpet into a garden.

Vergara wore an Elie Saab Spring 2025 couture gown covered in flowers, beads and shimmer. It is a one-shoulder design, and the shoulder is the star. Soft lilac petals are stacked along the neckline and spill down over one arm, with a sequined texture that catches the light.

The rest of the dress has a nude, sheer-looking base packed with silver beads and tiny sequins. Bright apple-green beaded vines twist up the body from hem to bust, and a big lilac flower sits low on the skirt. The gown follows her figure closely before opening into a softer mermaid-style finish.

With that much going on, the styling stayed restrained. She chose round stud earrings, a thin gold bracelet and a green stone ring on her right hand that echoed the vines on the dress. Nothing competed with the gown.

Her beauty look kept things simple too. She wore her long brunette hair in loose, center-parted waves, with softly defined eyes and a neutral rose lip. That soft glam balanced the intricacy of the beadwork and let the florals do the talking.

Vergara wasn’t the only guest who embraced dimensional texture. Her look was singled out as part of a textured florals trend, with a lifelike stack of purple blooms lining her asymmetrical neckline. Other stars went for sculptural 3D blooms on skirts, hips and necklines, and the night also featured graphic peplums and lifelike butterflies.

Teyana Taylor, for example, paired a cotton-candy-blue breastplate with a sheer skirt sprinkled with delicate floral appliqués. Seen together, the looks gave the red carpet a gallery-wing feel, as if the gowns belonged in an exhibit. Vergara’s one-shoulder petals fit right into that conversation.

Elie Saab is no stranger to this red carpet. The Lebanese designer also dressed Eva Longoria at the gala last year in a shimmering pink and white sequin gown, and again in haute couture at Cannes earlier this year. Vergara’s turn in the label shows how differently the same house can read depending on the wearer and the silhouette.

Compared with her recent glamour, the look is a notable shift. The Emmys gown was all about sequins, lace and a mermaid hem, while this one is about color, petals and handcrafted detail. Both highlight her figure, but the Academy Museum Gala gown leans far more whimsical.

The evening’s music came from Taylor Swift, who arrived in a pale blue pleated silk Dior gown with a beaded bow. She also performed “The Fate of Ophelia” live for the first time, with acoustic accompaniment. Kim Kardashian and Hailey Bieber were also among the guests who made the carpet feel like a rival to its East Coast counterpart.

The gala raises money for the Academy Museum’s exhibitions, public screenings and education programs, which gives the fashion a purpose beyond the photos. Vergara’s gown may not have been the loudest on the carpet, but it was one of the most imaginative.
