Doctor Doom’s NYCC Lab Hid a Symbiote Weapon, and Fans Have Theories

Marvel has never been shy about letting conventions do some of its storytelling. A prop table, a cryptic booth or a bit of set dressing can set off more speculation than a full trailer, and New York Comic Con 2026 was no exception. This year, the best Easter eggs weren’t on a screen at all, but on the shelves of a villain’s laboratory.

At NYCC, which ran October 8 to 11, Marvel set up a recreation of Doctor Doom’s lab as part of its ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ push. The display sat alongside a Latverian marketplace booth, created with Heroes & Villains and inspired by Doom’s homeland, complete with stained-glass-style windows and Doom’s flag at the entrance. Other Marvel booths also featured ‘Doomsday’ costumes and photo ops.

But the real attention went to what was on Doom’s shelves. The lab featured a Symbiote weapon, which some outlets described as a Venom Bomb, a bio-weapon introduced almost two decades ago in the comics that can turn even the greatest Avengers into Venom symbiotes. Alongside it were Cyclops’ visor, a broken piece of the Silver Surfer’s board, Ultron’s head, Thanos’ cracked helmet, the Ultimate Nullifier and a broken piece of Mjolnir.

The framing was deliberate. One write-up summed it up as Doom not building an army but collecting powerful artifacts from across the multiverse. It’s a notable shift in how Marvel is presenting its new villain, positioning him as a collector of trophies rather than a conventional conqueror.

The objects all map onto real story threads. Cyclops’ visor and Silver Surfer’s board connect to the X-Men and Fantastic Four sides of the universe, while Ultron’s head and Thanos’ helmet nod to earlier Avengers threats. The symbiote piece points toward the Spider-Man corner of the MCU, and some fans have linked it to the symbiote sample left behind in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’.

That connection is why speculation spiked. Tom Holland isn’t officially in the announced ‘Doomsday’ cast, and the first trailer offered no sign of Spider-Man. Insiders have offered conflicting rumors, with some claiming he isn’t in the film and others hinting that a version of Spider-Man appears.

Holland himself has been cryptic, telling interviewers during the ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ press run that fans would have to watch the movie to find out. ‘Brand New Day’ arrived on July 31, and some fans think the symbiote display could help explain its mixed-reaction post-credits scene. Others have floated a theory that Doom will use the symbiote on Spider-Man in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.

Not everyone is reading the display as a promise. Some fans argued the lab is a replica of Doom’s trophy room from Fortnite, which would make it more fan service than foreshadowing. Another reading suggests the symbiote could set up Venom’s arrival in ‘Secret Wars’ rather than ‘Doomsday’, which already has plenty to establish.

Even the weapon itself may be more of a deep-cut nod. One analysis noted that Doom’s arsenal could be filled with comic references shown fleetingly, even though they’re unlikely to be unleashed. A display is not a script, and Marvel has long used set dressing to tease things it never fully pays off.

The lab is just the latest in a steady build. Earlier this year, the Russo brothers promoted the film at SXSW London with a Doom-themed coffee pop-up filled with Latverian Easter eggs, and a new Doom card has appeared in ‘Magic: The Gathering’. The first full trailer arrived in July, and a special trailer played only in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con.

The studio clearly wants fans reading every detail. With Robert Downey Jr. playing Doom and a massive ensemble confirmed, including Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby and Anthony Mackie, the film arrives in theaters on December 18. ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ follows on December 17, 2027.

For now, the lab is a teaser rather than an answer, and it’s designed to be read that way. If the symbiote does appear on screen, it could signal a deeper Spider-Man connection long before ‘Secret Wars’. If not, it still reinforces the idea that Doom has been gathering power for a long time.

Either way, the next few weeks will bring more trailers and more theories. In the meantime, fans have a shelf full of artifacts to puzzle over.
