Manny Pacquiao Is Officially MCU Canon After a Surprise ‘VisionQuest’ Shoutout
Marvel has always loved sneaking real-world details into its stories, and fans love hunting for them. A passing reference can turn into a major talking point, especially when it celebrates someone from outside the usual Hollywood orbit. The latest example involves boxing legend Manny Pacquiao and the MCU’s newest Disney+ series.
‘VisionQuest’ is the final chapter in a trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ in 2021 and continued with ‘Agatha All Along’ in 2024. Created by showrunner Terry Matalas, it follows the rebuilt White Vision as he tries to understand who he is and regain his humanity after the events of ‘WandaVision.’ The series premiered Oct. 13 with 2 episodes, and Paul Bettany is joined by James Spader as Ultron and Ruaridh Mollica as Tommy.
Then came the third episode, ‘Reboot,’ which contains a moment Filipino fans are now celebrating. According to Philstar, Pacquiao was namedropped during a conversation between Vision and Tommy, which makes the eight-division champion officially part of the MCU’s world, even though he never appears on screen or plays a Marvel character.
The moment comes after Vision and Tommy have rescued each other in the previous episode and are laying low in a hotel. Tommy accidentally cuts his right hand at a vending machine, and his powers manifest. Vision notices the injury, but Tommy assures him he’ll manage, especially since he’s a southpaw, another word for left-handed.
That word triggers the reference. Emily Hampshire’s E.D.I.T.H., one of the AI personas that live inside Vision’s Mindspace and are visible only to him, appears and brings up Pacquiao, one of the greatest southpaw boxers in history, along with his 8 world titles.
The context makes the joke land even better. Tommy’s soul now resides in a London teenager named Thomas Shepherd, a character who has displayed bursts of superspeed, so a boxing legend known for his southpaw stance fits right into the conversation.

Pacquiao is a natural choice for a cultural reference. The boxer-turned-politician fought his way to titles across 8 weight divisions, and one boxing historian ranked him the greatest southpaw fighter of all time. At 47, he remains the first global sports star to come out of the Philippines.
The shoutout also joins a growing list of Philippine references in the franchise. Philstar notes that the trend began with Filipino-American actor Jacob Batalon playing Ned Leeds, Peter Parker’s Fil-Am best friend in the Tom Holland films.
It’s a small moment, but it shows how recognizable Pacquiao’s legacy has become. A mention in one of the world’s biggest entertainment franchises lands especially well for fans in the Philippines, who rarely see their heroes acknowledged this way.

Pacquiao’s cameo comes as ‘VisionQuest’ continues to impress. The series has been Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with its Tomatometer score reported anywhere from the mid-80s to 90%, while its audience score debuted at 88%. Critics praised Bettany and Spader, though not everyone was sold, and IndieWire’s Ben Travers graded it a C.
Episodes 3 and 4, ‘Reboot’ and ‘Malware,’ arrived together on Oct. 20. The remaining episodes continue weekly, with ‘Firewall’ and ‘Deadlock’ on Oct. 27, ‘Immolation’ on Nov. 3 and the finale, ‘Forever,’ on Nov. 10.
It’s also the last new live-action Marvel show on the Disney+ schedule before ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives in theaters Dec. 18. With several episodes still to come, fans have plenty of time to hunt for more Easter eggs like this one.
