Rachel Weisz, Brendan Fraser and Michael Johnston Spotted Filming ‘The Mummy: Book of the Dead’ in a Bustling Market Set
Few franchise revivals have been as eagerly awaited as the return of the O’Connells. More than two decades after the original adventures turned a treasure hunter, a librarian and a cursed priest into pop culture staples, Universal is digging up the sarcophagus once more.
The studio officially titled the film ‘The Mummy: Book of the Dead‘ in mid-October, exactly one year ahead of its October 15, 2027 release. That date is earlier than first planned, since Universal had originally scheduled the project for May 2028.
Now fans are getting their first glimpses of the shoot itself. New footage shows Rachel Weisz, Brendan Fraser and Michael Johnston spotted filming ‘The Mummy: Book of the Dead’ on what looks like a crowded market set, complete with colorful awnings, umbrellas and stalls.

The clip captures a busy marketplace crowded with extras in period dress. Canopies in orange and blue stretch over stalls, and a wooden cart sits in the foreground, evoking the Cairo bazaars of the earlier films.
The leaked video is a minute long and doesn’t reveal much of the story. Still, it gives a taste of the production design, which seems intent on recreating the old-school adventure feel that made the originals so beloved.

Principal photography kicked off on Monday, September 7, with Fraser confirming the start while accepting an award at the Deauville American Film Festival in France. He headed straight from there to Sky Studios in London, where part of the production is shooting.
Filming is set for London and Morocco, a nod to the 1999 original, which was shot in Morocco and the United Kingdom. According to one report, shooting is expected to continue through the end of the year.
Earlier set photos had already given fans their first look at Fraser and Weisz back as Rick and Evie, spotted together in West London 25 years after ‘The Mummy Returns’.

Beyond the leads, the returning ensemble is substantial. John Hannah is back as Jonathan Carnahan, Oded Fehr returns as Ardeth Bay, and Kevin J. O’Connor is set to play Beni Gabor again. Tara Emad has also joined the production.
Johnston, who made waves as Bear in the 2026 horror hit ‘Obsession’, joined in a role that remains under wraps. Some fans have guessed he might be playing a grown-up Alex O’Connell, but that is unconfirmed.
Numan Acar rounds out the announced newcomers. Johnston has also told Attitude that the film aims to capture some of the magic that made the original installments special.

The film is being directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the duo known as Radio Silence, from a script by David Coggeshall. The producers include Sean Daniel, William Sherak, James Vanderbilt and Paul Neinstein, with Fraser serving as an executive producer.
It marks the first time Fraser and Weisz have worked together in the franchise since 2001. Weisz skipped 2008’s ‘The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor’, where Maria Bello played Evelyn, and the new film reportedly disregards that entry entirely.
The title itself is a clear callback. The Book of the Dead is the artifact that raises Imhotep in the 1999 original. Universal hasn’t released a plot, and the studio hasn’t said whether Imhotep will return.
Part of the appeal is simple nostalgia. A direct sequel to the first two films, with the original leads back in costume, is exactly what many fans have been asking for since the franchise went quiet.
Then there’s the confidence the studio is showing. Moving the date up by months suggests Universal is happy with the project’s momentum, and the title reveal has only added to the buzz.
With filming still ongoing, expect more set photos and video to surface. For now, the market footage is enough to get fans’ imaginations running.
