Brad Bird Reveals the Family Archetypes Hiding Behind Every Power in ‘The Incredibles’

Pixar has made plenty of films about family, but few have wrapped the subject in a superhero costume as cleverly as ‘The Incredibles’. The 2004 film follows a family of supers who have been forced to suppress their abilities and live like an average suburban household. Its blend of domestic comedy and spy-style action helped it win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, and its screenplay earned a nomination as well.

Director Brad Bird pitched it to Pixar after the box office disappointment of ‘The Iron Giant’, bringing over much of that film’s staff. He later returned to write and direct ‘Incredibles 2’, which arrived in June 2018, 14 years after the original. Now a third film is on the way, scheduled for release on June 16, 2028.

That sequel has put Bird’s thinking about the family back in the spotlight. A quote in which he breaks down the logic behind every character’s powers is circulating again, and it shows how deliberate the design was. In his telling, each power is a symbol of the role that person plays in a family.

Bird has described this idea many times over the years. Speaking to NPR’s Fresh Air, he said he tried to base the powers on family archetypes. Fathers are expected to be strong, so Bob got super strength, while mothers are pulled in countless directions, so Helen can stretch.

Teenagers, he explained, tend to be insecure and defensive, which is why Violet can turn invisible and project force fields. Ten-year-old boys, meanwhile, are bundles of energy that simply go until they run out, and that became Dash’s super speed. Babies are the great unknown, so Jack-Jack could turn out to be anything, from a future world leader to something far more ordinary.

The result is a family where every ability doubles as a character note. It is a big reason the film works for both kids and parents, since viewers recognize their own households in the gags. Bird also grounded the story in his own experience as a father of 3 sons.

The symbolism is more than trivia. It shapes how the sequels have been built, and it has influenced how Bird thinks about the future of the franchise. This summer, he explained why the third film will not age up the characters, saying the powers are tied to those family archetypes and that aging the kids would undercut them.

In his view, people often assume aging characters will make them hipper or cooler, but it doesn’t work that way. Violet and Dash are meant to be a teenager and a 10-year-old, and Jack-Jack is meant to be a baby. That logic explains why the sequel keeps the kids close to their original ages.

For the first time, Bird is not directing a film about the Parr family. Peter Sohn, who directed ‘Elemental’ and ‘The Good Dinosaur’, is at the helm, with Bird writing the screenplay and producing alongside Dana Murray. Bird and Pixar chief Pete Docter chose Sohn personally, and Bird has said he recruited Sohn to Pixar after their work together on ‘The Iron Giant’.

Bird has described the arrangement as the home team, saying Sohn knows the franchise’s DNA. Pixar has said the story will center on Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack as they try to show their parents they’re ready to be full-fledged Supers. Another description says Violet and Dash sneak out on their own missions while babysitting Jack-Jack as his powers continue to change.

Bird is also juggling other long-gestating projects, including ‘Ray Gunn’ and the historical epic ‘1906’. That busy schedule is part of the reason he handed off directing duties.

The fresh attention on his family archetypes is a reminder of why the original lasted. The premise let Pixar turn familiar household chaos into spectacle, and it gave every character a reason to exist. With the next chapter approaching, fans are eager to see how the formula evolves.
