Casting Kratos was always going to be a physical challenge. The Spartan-born warrior at the center of PlayStation’s ‘God of War’ franchise is defined by his sheer mass, and any live-action actor needs to look like he can tear a god in half. That is why Dave Bautista’s Kratos transformation has become one of the most closely watched stories around Prime Video’s upcoming series.

The adaptation comes from showrunner Ronald D. Moore, writing and executive producing through his Tall Ship Productions banner. Prime Video has given the show a two-season order, with both seasons set to shoot back-to-back, and Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios are producing alongside PlayStation Productions. Production began in Vancouver in February, with the first official image of Kratos and Atreus released around the start of filming.

The role was originally given to Ryan Hurst, who was announced in January 2026. Hurst tore a bicep while performing a stunt on set, a injury that required surgery and would have pushed the production restart into 2027. Rather than wait, Amazon and Sony decided to recast.

Bautista’s deal closed on August 20, after Variety first reported he was in talks. Scenes already shot with Hurst, reportedly covering about 4 episodes, are being reshot with Bautista in the lead. Hurst had reportedly gained about 40 pounds for the role, which set a high bar for his replacement.

Now Bautista is showing his progress. The 57-year-old actor revealed he has gained another 20 pounds of muscle for the role, bringing him to 250 pounds. He shared the update in a short Instagram Story video, wearing a ‘God of War’ T-shirt and flexing, with on-screen text reading “Gained 20 lbs for GOW” and a “250” sticker.

The jump is significant given where he started. Bautista was reportedly around 230 pounds when he took the job, lighter than the roughly 240 he reported in 2024. He had deliberately slimmed down from 315 pounds for ‘Knock at the Cabin,’ losing about 75 pounds over roughly 3 years, so he is now rebuilding the size he once carried as a wrestler.

For context, Bautista wrestled most of his WWE career at around 290 pounds. On September 3, he said he was 3 weeks into weight training and had 2 more months to get where he needed to be. Reports have described his progress as on schedule for an October restart, and he has also been growing out the beard that Kratos wears in the Norse era of the games.

Production hasn’t confirmed a target weight. One speculative estimate suggests he could approach 280 pounds, similar to what Hurst reportedly built. Whether 250 is the finish line or just another checkpoint remains to be seen.

Bautista has long been a fan pick for Kratos, and the news of his casting was met with an overwhelmingly positive response from fans. The recast also spared production a long delay, since few actors could step into the part on short notice in the physical shape it demands. His weight update has helped quiet early doubts about whether he could match the character’s bulk.

The rest of the cast is already in place, including Callum Vinson as Atreus, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldr, Teresa Palmer as Sif and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor. Max Parker plays Heimdall, with Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as the brothers Brok and Sindri. Frederick E.O. Toye is directing the first 2 episodes.

The first season adapts the story of the 2018 game, following Kratos and Atreus as they journey across the Norse realms to spread the ashes of Atreus’s mother. Later material is expected to draw on ‘God of War Ragnarök.’ A casting call for older versions of Atreus and Thrud suggests a time jump in the second season, though Vinson remains attached for the first.

No release date has been announced, and the production restart has reset whatever timeline existed before Hurst’s injury. Still, the scale of Bautista’s preparation shows how seriously he is taking the part. For fans who have waited years for a live-action Kratos, every pound counts.

Do you think Dave Bautista is the right choice to play Kratos in Prime Video's God of War series?
