Jeep’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Ad May Be Hiding a Doctor Strange Clue in Its Final Seconds
Doctor Strange has been one of the strangest puzzles of the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ campaign. He was left out of the livestream announcing the confirmed cast, and a string of contradictory comments from his own actor has kept fans guessing about where the Sorcerer Supreme fits into the story. A new commercial may have just added another piece to the pile.
Benedict Cumberbatch told Variety that Strange would not appear in the film, while saying the character would be quite central to where things might go in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’. He later admitted he got that wrong and said he was in the next one, and confirmed his return at Tokyo Comic Con. Marvel has not officially confirmed Strange’s role.
That is the context for a small detail in Jeep’s new ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ ad. At the end of the spot, the Jeeps drive out of glowing orange portals that look a lot like the sling ring portals Strange creates, and Doom’s tower stands in the background so the portals open right in front of it. The commercial also features Doctor Doom, Captain America, Thor, Nightcrawler, Johnny Storm, Cyclops, The Thing, the Sentinels and H.E.R.B.I.E.
Within the MCU, a sling ring is used by sorcerers to create an inter-dimensional portal to another location, or in some cases, another dimension. The effect has a long history on screen. In ‘Avengers: Endgame’, the Avengers and their allies arrive on the battlefield through sling ring portals in preparation for the battle against Thanos, with Strange, Wong and other sorcerers opening additional portals from elsewhere on Earth and around the galaxy.
So an orange portal at the end of a Marvel ad carries a lot of symbolism. It suggests that magic of Strange’s kind is how people, or in this case vehicles, reach a destination they otherwise couldn’t. In the Jeep spot, that destination appears to be the foot of Doom’s tower.

This isn’t the first time the sling ring has entered the conversation. Scooper Daniel Richtman shared that Doctor Doom’s right-hand man in the film would be a “wizard” who uses a sling ring, and later added that the character wears a mask similar to Doom’s, but with a slot for a third eye on the forehead. Strange gained a third eye at the end of ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ after using the Darkhold, which is why many fans connected the dots.
Marvel Studios has not confirmed the claim. Still, it fits the comics. In ‘Secret Wars’, Strange serves as Doom’s sheriff and enforcer, and his allegiance is driven more by survival and pragmatism than loyalty. Den of Geek has also noted that Strange is the Marvel hero most tied to Doom outside the Fantastic Four, and that the ‘One World Under Doom’ comic crossover kicks off with Doom taking the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme.

The tower in the ad has its own story. Promo art released on October 4 gave fans a first look at Doomstadt Tower, Doom’s Latverian headquarters, and the green and yellow-lit mosaic across its front indicates it houses the villain’s throne room. That art bolstered theories that the final battle will take place in Latveria.
Doom’s throne room has been a recurring part of the marketing. A promotional booth at the Shanghai Expo recreated it, and the October wave introduced the Latverian Witches, 3 masked figures flanking Doom in his throne room who were first shown at San Diego Comic-Con in July.
The ad is part of a bigger marketing partnership. Jeep and Marvel have confirmed a co-branded campaign supporting the film, and Stellantis marketing chief Olivier Francois was cautious about whether Jeep vehicles will be featured in the movie. That makes the portal shot feel less like a product placement and more like a wink at fans watching closely.
The Russo brothers direct, with Robert Downey Jr. as Doom, and the Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts and X-Men all face him. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opens December 18, and it will not be long before we learn whether those orange portals were a clever bit of branding or a real breadcrumb.
Do you think Doctor Strange will be working for Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday?
