There’s always something to discuss regarding Marvel and DC adaptations on both big and small screens. These last few weeks, we discussed the latest Marvel movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Sony’s upcoming animated movie Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and the upcoming DC movie The Flash.

However, we didn’t forget that Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is also preparing new content for us. This cinematic universe didn’t have a strong start with two Venom movies, which received mixed reviews despite their commercial success, and the Morbius movie, which panned by critics and bombed at the box office.

Still, Sony isn’t discouraged from continuing their own universe based on Marvel characters, so we can expect Kraven the Hunter this year, which will be Sony’s first R-rated superhero movie, and Madame Web, about which we don’t know much apart from a few cast members.

Sydney Sweeney’s role in Sony’s Madame Web has been revealed!

Madame Web was first announced to be in development in 2019, and the production started in July 2022 with Dakota Johnson playing the title role, with Sydney Sweeney, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott in supporting roles. While only Johnson’s role was officially known, today, we finally found out who Sweeney will play in the upcoming movie.

According to Total Film magazine (via GamesRadar+), the Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney will star in Madame Web as Julia Carpenter, who is known in the source material as the second Spider-Woman. Julia Carpenter debuted in Marvel Comics in 1984, and not long after becoming Spider-Woman, she was drawn into the first Secret Wars.

Sydney Sweeney gained wide recognition for appearing in acclaimed TV shows, including The Handmaid’s Tale, Sharp Objects, Euphoria, and The White Lotus. In 2022, she was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards for starring in Euphoria and The White Lotus. She joined Madame Web in 2022, and now she opened up about her Marvel role.

“I couldn’t be more excited. I can’t wait to be able to talk about it. […] I can’t wait to be able to be next to the girls that I filmed with – Dakota and Isabela, and Celeste. We had so much fun together. And I’m really excited that it’s just gonna be a powerhouse of badass females for the world to see.”

Sweeney also shared her love for the superhero genre, claiming herself as a huge fan of the Avengers movies.

“Superheroes have been my entire life! Those [movies] are all my parents ever wanted to go see. I think I’ve seen The Avengers probably 20, 30-plus times. My family, they love [them]. I could not have made them happier choosing to do that project [Madame Web].”

In Marvel Comics, Jessica Drew is known as the original Spider-Woman, while Julia Carpenter was the second character that donned the mask of Spider-Woman. The third official Spider-Woman was Mattie Franklin, and there have been several alternate incarnations, including Gwen Stacy’s Spider-Woman and the Ultimate Spider-Woman.

Even though Disney “borrowed” Peter Parker’s Spider-Man from Sony to have him in Marvel Studios’ Marvel Cinematic Universe, seeing how everyone wanted to achieve what MCU has done, Sony decided to use other Spider-Man-related characters they had the rights to create their own cinematic universe, which was originally named Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters before it was renamed to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (even though we haven’t seen Spider-Man in that universe yet).

S. J. Clarkson directs Madame Web from a screenplay written by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama. The movie is set to be released on February 16, 2024.
