Darren Mann Is Furious With the Body Count of ‘1923’ Season 2’s Penultimate Episode: “I was pissed off. I was sad.”
A sequel to 1883 and a prequel to Yellowstone, 1923 managed to find its own voice in the world of Yellowstone and is generally regarded as a very good and high-quality addition to the well-established lore.
The series, which is now in its second season, stars Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford as Cara and Jacob Dutton, respectively, alongside other main cast members who made the show more colorful.
But, after the premiere of “The Mountain Teeth of Monsters,” the second season’s penultimate episode, the number of characters has been significantly reduced and Darren Mann is not happy about it. Be careful, as there are major spoliers for Episode 6, “The Mountain Teeth of Monsters,” ahead.
In case you did not know, the body count in Episode 6 was major, as the series lost seven characters. Among them is, as things stand now, Darren Mann’s Jack Dutton, who lost his life to Clyde, who is ultimately connected to Donald Whitfield, the series’ big baddie, played by Timothy Dalton.
As you can see, the death of Jack, along with several others, was a shock, and Mann was quite shocked himself when he read about his character’s death in the screenplay. “I received the scripts normal like everybody else. I read through and eventually got to that page and was like, ‘Well, God damn, there it is. Okay,’” he said to the press.
“I went into the show figuring as much — it’s like playing Russian roulette with five bullets on a Taylor Sheridan show. The chances of making it out are not looking that great! So I kind of expected that I might go, but it’s still a shock when you finally read it,” he added.
Of course, the emotional aspect was also intense. “It’s a tough one. When I read it, I went through all sorts of emotions. I was angry at first. I was pissed off. I was sad. I really grieved him in a whole bunch of different ways because I love playing Jack so much. He’s such a beautiful character,” he explained.
“He’s naïve in all the best ways. He’s not naïve from a place of ignorance but from a place of love and heart. He’s always trying to do the right thing by everybody. So I was definitely saddened, because I just love playing this character,” he added further. “It was a nice character to be inside of. Some characters are pretty challenging just sitting with them day to day, but going to set and playing Jack was so much fun. He always trying to do the right thing.“
The 1923 series was initially pitched as a two-season prequel, but there are talks that there could be more. Stay tuned for more updates!
