‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Sequel Unleashes Intense New Trailer — Familiar Faces Return as a New Generation Runs for Their Lives
A new chapter in the ‘90s horror saga I Know What You Did Last Summer is set to hit theaters on July 18, 2025, bringing back stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. for a chilling continuation.
A freshly released trailer teases a bloody return, blending nostalgia with a modern edge.
The plot follows a group of five friends whose lives unravel after a deadly car accident. Choosing to hide their secret, they think they’ve escaped the consequences, until a vengeful killer emerges a year later, targeting them with clear knowledge of their crime. The story echoes the 1997 classic but promises a darker, more brutal twist.
Hewitt, reprising her role as Julie James, shared her nerves about returning after over 20 years. “I’ll be super honest, I had total anxiety for 48 hours before [filming] because I was like, ‘Can I do this? Am I going to pull this off?’ It’s a lot of pressure,” she told People. She also described the set as a warm reunion, saying, “It felt like a high school reunion… I have butterflies in my stomach and my heart is beating really fast.”
Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, known for Do Revenge, this sequel ramps up the gore. Robinson told People the violence is “much more brutal” and cranked “up to a hundred” compared to the original. Unlike past attempts, like a scrapped 2014 reboot penned by Mike Flanagan, this film is a direct follow-up to the beloved slasher.
The original I Know What You Did Last Summer was a 1997 hit, earning $125 million on a $17 million budget. It spawned a 1998 sequel and a 2006 direct-to-video film. A 2021 TV series fizzled out after one season, but this theatrical return aims to reignite the franchise’s spark.
My Take: This sequel feels like a bold move, blending nostalgia with a grittier edge to hook both old fans and new viewers. Hewitt and Prinze Jr.’s return is a big draw, but the amped-up violence could risk alienating fans of the original’s suspense-driven vibe. I’m curious if it’ll recapture the ‘90s slasher magic or lean too hard into modern gore. What do you think about this revival? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
