2025’s Biggest Original Box Office Hit Finally Gets a Streaming Release Date
Ryan Coogler’s vampire film Sinners is heading to streaming next month. Warner Bros. has announced that the horror hit will be available to watch on Max starting July 4.
Sinners has been a massive success in theaters. The film made over $361 million worldwide, with more than $275 million coming from the U.S. alone. That number puts it ahead of every original horror movie in U.S. history, even beating out Jaws, which held the record for decades.
What makes Sinners different is that it’s not based on a book, remake, or franchise. It’s a brand-new story. And it’s not just big in the U.S.—it’s now the top-grossing original horror movie of all time globally.
The movie had a huge start, bringing in $48 million on its opening weekend. That kind of debut hasn’t been seen for an original movie since before the pandemic. Even more impressive, the film barely dropped in ticket sales in the following weekends. In its second weekend, it only fell 4.9%, a rare thing for movies that open that big. Only Shrek and Avatar have done the same.
In its third weekend, Sinners earned another $33 million, breaking another horror record. It passed $200 million at the U.S. box office in its fourth weekend. That’s a mark no original movie has hit since Coco in 2017.
Among original films released in the last 15 years, Sinners now ranks second overall. It’s behind only Inception, and it made more than Interstellar and Get Out.
A big part of its success came from premium formats. Nearly half of its opening weekend came from IMAX and other large screens. That’s unusual for horror movies.
Viewers loved it too. The film got an “A” grade from CinemaScore, which is very rare for horror. That hasn’t happened in 35 years. A survey from PostTrak said 92% of people liked it, and 84% said they would tell others to see it.
The film takes place in the 1930s and follows twin brothers, both played by Michael B. Jordan, as they return to Mississippi. They gather musicians for a night of music and dancing, but things take a dark turn when vampire hunters show up. The movie mixes horror with themes of community and pride.
Jordan shares the screen with Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Delroy Lindo, Omar Benson Miller, and Jayme Lawson. Autumn Durald Arkapaw, who shot Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, was the cinematographer and used 70mm IMAX film to capture the movie’s style.
Sinners has been praised for its directing, acting, and music. Coogler’s vision and Jordan’s performances were especially highlighted in reviews.
Honestly, it’s great to see an original horror film doing so well, especially one that’s not tied to any franchise. It shows audiences are still excited about fresh stories. Will you be streaming Sinners when it hits Max? Let us know in the comments.
