This live-action movie is based on Mattel’s classic franchise and has had a long and bumpy road to get here. The project changed studios, writers, and directors multiple times over the years. After many delays, the film finally got the green light with Travis Knight directing and Chris Butler writing the latest version of the script.
In the story, Adam Glenn crashes on Earth as a kid, losing the Sword of Grayskull. He grows up away from his true home, Eternia. Now an adult, he recovers the sword and returns to fight the evil Skeletor and protect his planet. Galitzine plays Adam, who becomes He-Man, the hero at the center of the battle.
Mendes plays Teela, his strong and loyal sergeant who’s also the adopted daughter of Man-At-Arms, played by Idris Elba.
The cast also includes Jared Leto as the villain Skeletor. He’s the half-brother of King Randor, who’s played by James Purefoy. Charlotte Riley plays Queen Marlena, Adam’s mother and a former astronaut from Earth.
Alison Brie is cast as Evil-Lyn, a powerful sorceress working for Skeletor. Other characters include the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull (played by Morena Baccarin), Fisto (Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson), and Adam’s best friend Suzie (Sasheer Zamata).
Leto’s role as Skeletor had been rumored for a while and was officially confirmed in December 2024. In the same month, other cast members were announced, including Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, Hafthor Bjornsson as Goat Man, and Kojo Attah as Tri-Klops. Jon Xue Zhang is set to play Ram-Man.
Filming began on January 6, 2025, in London, with Fabian Wagner as the cinematographer. Nicholas Galitzine confirmed the end of production on his Instagram on June 15, 2025. The film was originally planned for different release dates in past years, and at one point was even being developed by Netflix. However, Netflix canceled the project in 2023 after spending around $30 million, citing high production costs.
Over the years, many directors and writers have come and gone. John Woo, Jon M. Chu, and David S. Goyer were all attached at different points. The movie even had other actors lined up for He-Man, like Noah Centineo and Kyle Allen, before Galitzine finally took the role.
This film has taken a long time to get off the ground, but it looks like it’s finally happening. With a big cast, a fresh take on the story, and a confirmed release date, fans of the classic toy line and animated series have something to look forward to.
After so many changes and delays, it’s great to see Masters of the Universe finally coming together. The cast looks solid, and the story sounds like a fun mix of sci-fi and action. Hopefully, the movie lives up to the years of hype and actually gives fans something worth the wait. What do you think about the cast and the plot? Are you excited for the movie?
