New Trailer for ‘IT: Welcome to Derry’ Unleashes Chilling Return to Pennywise’s World
A brand new trailer has been released for It: Welcome to Derry, giving fans their first real look at the creepy world of Pennywise before the events of the It movies.
The upcoming show is a prequel to It (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019), and it’s based on Stephen King’s famous 1986 horror novel It.
The series is set to premiere on HBO in October 2025 and will have nine episodes. It’s being developed by Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs, who all worked on the It films. According to Variety, the show takes place in the 1960s and will explore how Pennywise came to be.
Bill Skarsgård is back as Pennywise the Clown, and the main cast also includes Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, Taylour Paige, James Remar, and Stephen Rider. Some of the recurring cast members are Madeleine Stowe, Dean Yool, Kimberly Norris Guerrero, and Rudy Mancuso.
In a 2025 interview with Radio TU, Andy Muschietti talked about the series and how it’s connected to the original book. He said the show is inspired by the interlude chapters from the novel and added, “There’s a reason why the story is told backwards.”
He explained that the plan is for the series to have three seasons. Season one is set in 1962, season two will go back to 1935, and season three will be set even earlier, in 1908.
Filming for the show started in May 2023 in different parts of Ontario, Canada, including Toronto, Hamilton, and Port Hope. They even shot some scenes at Delta Secondary School. Production went on until late 2024, with a short break during the SAG-AFTRA strike in July. Filming eventually wrapped in August 2024. At that time, it was confirmed that the show would be called It: Welcome to Derry.
In May 2024, it was revealed that Bill Skarsgård would also serve as an executive producer. Andy Muschietti directed the first four episodes of the season. Benjamin Wallfisch, who did the music for the It movies, is returning to create the score for the series, according to reports from May 2025.
With the release of the first trailer, fans are already buzzing about the dark and terrifying world the series is bringing to life. The footage gives a glimpse of the eerie town of Derry, where evil lurks beneath the surface and where Pennywise’s origin story begins to unfold.
It: Welcome to Derry promises to dive deep into the darkness that haunts the town, and with Skarsgård back in clown makeup, things are going to get scary fast. The countdown to October has officially begun.
