Helen Mirren Says James Bond Must Stay Male: “I’m Such a Feminist, But You Can’t Have a Woman”
Oscar-winning actress Helen Mirren recently shared her thoughts on the future of James Bond, and she’s clear about one thing: the role should always be played by a man. Mirren, who spoke with Saga Magazine about her new film The Thursday Murder Club, explained her reasoning while chatting with her costar Pierce Brosnan.
“I’m such a feminist. But you can’t have a woman. It just doesn’t work. James Bond has to be James Bond, otherwise it becomes something else,” Mirren said.
Brosnan, who famously played Bond in four films during the 1990s and early 2000s, agreed with Mirren’s perspective and expressed excitement for whoever takes on the legendary spy next.
“I wish them well. I’m so excited to see the next man come on the stage and to see a whole new exuberance and life for this character. I adore the world of James Bond. It’s been very good to me. It’s the gift that keeps giving. And I’m just a member of the audience now, sitting back, saying: ‘Show us what you’re going to do,’” he said.
Fans have been waiting eagerly since Daniel Craig’s final performance in No Time To Die in 2021. Craig brought the iconic spy to life across five films, leaving big shoes for the next actor. With Amazon now in control of the franchise, the next Bond film, Bond 26, is set to be directed by Denis Villeneuve, known for Dune and Prisoners, with a script by Steven Knight. Longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have stepped aside, allowing Amazon full creative control, and the movie will be produced by David Heyman and Amy Pascal. Pascal is no stranger to high-profile franchises, having worked on the Spider-Man films and the 2006 Casino Royale.
Although no official release date, title, or casting announcements have been made, rumors continue to swirl. Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been mentioned as a potential candidate, while insider reports suggest the team is looking for someone who brings a fresh perspective to the role rather than imitating previous Bonds.
With Villeneuve directing and Knight writing, expectations are high for the next chapter of 007. While details remain scarce, Mirren and Brosnan’s comments give a clear signal that the legacy of James Bond as a male spy will continue, at least for now. Fans are left watching closely and guessing who will step into the tuxedo next.
