‘Man of Tomorrow’ Is Already Shaping Up to Be the DCU’s Most Epic Film Yet, and DC Studios’ Lars Winther Just Proved It

James Gunn’s new DC Universe has been building momentum since ‘Superman’ arrived in the summer of 2025, and with ‘Supergirl’ now in theaters, anticipation for what comes next is reaching a fever pitch. The first chapter of what Gunn has called the Superman Saga laid the foundation, and the pieces are now clearly moving into place for something far larger. With filming currently underway on the follow-up, word from inside DC Studios is starting to trickle out, and what fans are hearing is nothing short of exciting.

At the blue carpet premiere of ‘Supergirl’ in Brooklyn, DC Studios executive producer Lars P. Winther gave the most candid production update yet on ‘Man of Tomorrow’. The man who has served as a key physical production figure on every major Gunn DCU project to date, spoke directly about where things stand with the upcoming film and what audiences can expect from its scope and story. His comments immediately set social media ablaze, with journalists and fans alike reacting to just how confident and enthusiastic he sounded.

Per Winther, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere, confirmed that production on ‘Man of Tomorrow’ is currently at the halfway point, and offered a revealing glimpse at the Superman and Supergirl dynamic that will run through the film. He noted that Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El has a significant presence in the movie, explaining that her arc in ‘Supergirl’ ends in a way that positions her to reconnect with her cousin Clark and return to a more Earth-based story. The idea of the two Kryptonians sharing substantial screen time is already generating enormous enthusiasm from the fanbase.

Winther described the transition between ‘Supergirl’ and ‘Man of Tomorrow’ as intentional and meaningful, noting that Kara “has done her wild ways” and is now seeking to reintegrate with her cousin’s world on Earth. He also hinted that DC Studios already knows what the next film after ‘Man of Tomorrow’ will be, and that Supergirl will be a significant part of it as well. The suggestion that Alcock’s Supergirl is being set up as a long-term fixture of the franchise, rather than a one-film character, is a strong signal of how seriously Gunn and his team are treating the Super-Family concept.

Filming on ‘Man of Tomorrow’ began in April under the working title Exodus, taking place primarily at Trilith Studios in Fayetteville, Georgia, with additional locations in the United Kingdom and Cincinnati, Ohio, and is expected to wrap by mid-2026. That relatively compressed timeline, combined with the breadth of what Winther is describing, suggests Gunn is moving fast and with clear creative purpose.

The other major talking point from Winther’s comments centered on Lars Eidinger’s Brainiac, described as operating on an entirely different level of villainy compared to what the DCU has offered so far. That characterization tracks with everything that has emerged about how DC Studios approached casting and designing the character.

Eidinger, who was selected after a worldwide search, went through an extraordinary audition process that included a two-hour makeup session and a full 3D body scan at Trilith Studios. He was escorted under an umbrella leaving the makeup room specifically to ensure no one outside could photograph what Brainiac looks like, pointing to just how guarded DC Studios has been about the villain’s design.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Eidinger described Brainiac as “the incarnation of Satan” and framed that level of symbolism as almost Shakespearean, drawing comparisons between the character and the moral extremes found in classical theatre. For a franchise that has so far given fans a charismatic and emotionally complex Lex Luthor in Nicholas Hoult, Brainiac’s arrival promises to raise the antagonist bar to a genuinely alarming height.

‘Man of Tomorrow’ was announced in September 2025, with Gunn describing it as “as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie,” with the two rivals forced to work together against a far greater threat. The film will take place approximately two years after the events of ‘Superman’, in what Gunn has described as basically real time on the DCU timeline.

Frank Grillo, who wrapped his scenes as Rick Flag Sr. earlier this month, called the film “extraordinarily fun” in an Instagram message and described the DCU as “like nothing else,” while teasing that the movie is going to be “fucking dynamite.” With that kind of energy from someone who has now appeared in multiple Gunn projects, and with a production that is reportedly right on schedule for its July 2027 theatrical release, the excitement surrounding ‘Man of Tomorrow’ is entirely justified.

Let us know in the comments what you’re most looking forward to in ‘Man of Tomorrow’, whether it’s the Superman and Supergirl dynamic, or Brainiac finally making his big-screen DCU debut.
