Marvel’s plan to bring the X-Men into the MCU has been in motion for years, and now things are finally moving forward.

Back in 2019, Kevin Feige told fans at San Diego Comic-Con that mutants would join the MCU one day, but he made it clear their version would not be the same as the old Fox movies.

By late 2023, Marvel began meeting with writers to develop the story. In May 2024, Michael Lesslie entered talks to write the script, and a year later, he was confirmed for the job. Soon after, Jake Schreier was announced as director, fresh off strong reactions to his Marvel film Thunderbolts*.

Schreier spoke with Empire about his new role and confirmed that the work has officially begun. “I can’t say anything about it, but we’ve started work on X-Men, and that’s obviously very, very exciting,” he said.

The filmmaker explained that his experience with Thunderbolts* taught him a lot about handling big Marvel team-ups.

“There are so many things that I didn’t know about before I started [Thunderbolts],”* Schreier admitted. “The biggest learning curve for me was the proportion of the action to the more emotional, character-driven scenes, and how, even though it’s more shooting days than I’ve ever had, they get eaten up quite quickly by the action stuff. By the time we got to the end of it, it felt like, ‘Oh, now I feel like we get how to do this a little bit better.’”

He also shared how surreal it is to film on such a massive scale. “Look, who gets to do that? [On Thunderbolts*] we’re in the middle of nowhere in Utah, in a gorgeous location, owning a road, and filming in 100-degree heat, or finding yourself on the second-tallest building in the world. These are very special experiences.”

According to sources, Marvel will begin casting soon but wants to bring in younger actors rather than big-name stars. One agent told reporters this is also a way to “keep the cost down.”

The studio has already set a July 23, 2027 release date for a future movie, but insiders say that project will not be the X-Men film. Marvel declined to comment further when asked.

For now, fans know one thing for sure: Jake Schreier is officially working on the MCU’s first X-Men film, and the mutants’ long-awaited arrival is finally starting to take shape.
