‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Breaks One of the Most Important Records in HBO History
HBO’s latest Game of Thrones spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is off to a very strong start. The series is pulling in huge viewership numbers worldwide and is already being called one of the network’s biggest debut hits.
According to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, the show is averaging around 36 million viewers per episode globally. This figure was shared in a recent letter to shareholders linked to the company’s earnings report.
That level of audience places the series among the most successful first seasons in HBO’s history. It also strengthens Warner Bros. Discovery’s plans to keep building out the Game of Thrones universe across both television and film projects.
The series first launched on HBO and HBO Max and is based in the world of Westeros. It follows Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall and his young companion Egg, focusing on their journey through a smaller-scale story set in the larger fantasy universe.
The lead roles are played by Peter Claffey as Dunk and Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg. The cast also includes names such as Daniel Ings, Bertie Carvel, Danny Webb, Sam Spruell, Shaun Thomas, Finn Bennett, Edward Ashley, Tanzyn Crawford, Henry Ashton, Youssef Kerkour, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, and Daniel Monks.
The series is shaped by several key creators. George R. R. Martin is involved as co-creator and executive producer, alongside Ira Parker, who also serves as showrunner and co-creator. Other executive producers include Sarah Bradshaw, Owen Harris, Ryan Condal, and Vince Gerardis.
HBO has described the show as a lighter but character-driven story set in the same universe as Game of Thrones, focusing on the bond between two unlikely companions.
Despite being new, the show already received an early renewal. A second season was confirmed before the first one even premiered, with a planned release expected in 2027. This decision now looks even more confident given the strong audience numbers.
The wider Game of Thrones franchise continues to expand at HBO. House of the Dragon is also moving forward, with a third season arriving soon and further seasons already confirmed.
Overall, HBO appears to be heavily investing in the franchise, and the early success of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms shows that audiences are still strongly engaged with stories from Westeros.
These numbers show that HBO is still very confident in the Game of Thrones universe, and so are viewers. The strong global audience suggests there is still a lot of interest in these stories, even years after the original series ended. At the same time, it raises the question of how long this expansion can stay fresh without feeling repetitive. What do you think about this big success for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms?
