A New Star Wars Project Has Just Been Announced by George Lucas
A new museum project in Los Angeles is starting to take shape, and it is already drawing attention from film fans and art lovers. Large-scale cultural spaces like this often combine different forms of storytelling, from painting and photography to modern cinema, to show how creative work changes over time. This kind of approach is meant to connect older art forms with newer ones in a single shared space.
According to an official announcement from the upcoming Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, a major new exhibition has been confirmed as part of its opening lineup. The museum was co-founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, and is scheduled to open on September 22, in Exposition Park, Los Angeles.
The announcement includes a new exhibition titled Star Wars in Motion, which will be one of the first major showcases inside the museum. It will feature props, costumes, illustrations, and vehicle designs from the original Star Wars films as well as the prequel era. The exhibit focuses on how visual storytelling developed through the making of the films.
Alongside the announcement, the museum released a short teaser video. It includes a rapid montage of scenes from the Star Wars films, followed by the message: “Inaugural Cinema Exhibition: Star Wars in Motion. On September 22, we ride.” The clip ends with a digital rendering of the museum building, showing its exterior design and surrounding green campus.
The Lucas Museum is designed around the idea of narrative art, meaning art that tells stories across different formats. Its planned exhibitions will include a wide range of material such as prehistoric cave art, Renaissance paintings, comic books, photography, and modern film production. The goal is to show how storytelling has evolved across human history.
At launch, the museum will feature more than 1,200 objects. Other planned exhibitions include topics like comics, architecture, photography, and children’s literature. The comics section alone will include artists such as Jack Kirby and Frank Miller, while other sections will highlight figures from illustration, painting, and film history.
The Star Wars-focused exhibit is expected to be one of the main highlights, especially because of its connection to Lucas’s early filmmaking work. Lucas originally wrote and directed the first Star Wars film in 1977, which became a massive box office success and led to the creation of the long-running franchise.
After its announcement, the franchise expanded across multiple trilogies, spin-off films, and television series. Disney later acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, which led to even more Star Wars content being produced across film and streaming platforms.
Despite that expansion, the museum exhibit will focus on the original six films Lucas was directly involved in before the sale of Lucasfilm. This gives the exhibition a more specific historical focus, centered on the creator’s original vision.
The museum itself will be located on an 11-acre campus surrounded by gardens and designed as a space for both art and film history. Memberships are already available ahead of its opening, with different pricing tiers announced for early supporters.
