After ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ Destin Daniel Cretton Is About to Bring the Ninja World to Life with a Live-Action ‘Naruto’ Movie

The challenge of casting unfamiliar faces as globally recognized figures has become its own kind of entertainment narrative, with each new project sparking heated debates in fan communities about who deserves the roles.
For over a decade, development on one particularly massive anime adaptation has quietly progressed behind the scenes. Lionsgate first secured the rights to bring ‘Naruto‘ to the big screen years ago, with the project eventually shifting directorial hands before finding its current creative lead. The franchise, which has left an indelible mark on global popular culture, represents one of the most high-stakes live-action conversions in development.
Now, the project is officially moving into its next phase. Director Destin Daniel Cretton announced that his ‘Naruto’ live-action movie is officially in pre-production and Lionsgate will hold a worldwide casting call for the leads Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura. The announcement marks a significant milestone for the adaptation, following Cretton finishing work on ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’.
Cretton is no stranger to bringing comic book properties and expansive fictional worlds to the screen. The filmmaker is best known for his work on Marvel’s ‘Shang-Chi’ and the upcoming ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, giving him proven experience with massive ensemble casts and action-heavy storytelling. This time, however, he’s taking on a dual role behind the camera. Destin Daniel Cretton is writing and directing the project, bringing both authorial vision and directorial execution to the adaptation.
In a statement, Cretton said, “Kishimoto-sensei’s stories have inspired generations of fans around the world, and it’s an honor to bring his world and characters to the big screen in live action for the very first time,” according to Variety. His enthusiasm appears genuine and grounded in respect for the source material—a reassuring tone given the passionate fanbase that will ultimately judge the film’s success.
The casting call represents an ambitious approach to finding talent. The worldwide casting search will focus on Team 7, including Naruto Uzumaki, Sakura Haruno, and Sasuke Uchiha, with additional casting for supporting roles to follow. This open methodology marks a departure from typical Hollywood casting practices, signaling that the filmmakers are willing to consider fresh faces rather than rely solely on established stars.
Original manga creator Masashi Kishimoto has thrown his considerable weight behind the project. Kishimoto stated, “Right now, miracles are happening to me, one after another. My work, ‘Naruto’ is truly, truly becoming a Hollywood movie! And an even greater miracle is that the film will be directed by the one and only Destin Daniel Cretton. I still cannot believe it! If so many miracles have already come together, then let us hope for even more. I am eagerly looking forward to the miraculous encounters that will bring us extraordinary and passionate actors!”
The property represents substantial commercial and cultural value. The manga has printed over 250 million copies in more than 60 countries and territories, and follows adolescent ninja Naruto Uzumaki, who dreams of becoming his community’s protector and leader known as the village ninja. That global reach means success or failure will likely be felt far beyond Hollywood’s usual sphere of influence.
One remaining question lingers: whether the film will center on the characters’ younger years or their teenage years in the ‘Shippuden’ era. It’s currently unknown when this film will take place in the canon, whether it will take place when the team is 12, like in the original ‘Naruto’ series, or when they are 16 in ‘Naruto: Shippuden’. This choice will fundamentally shape the film’s tone and the age range of actors being sought.
