The Live-Action ‘Naruto’ Movie Just Made Its Biggest Move Yet, and Fans Have Feelings
Anime adaptations have had a rocky history in Hollywood, but the tide has been shifting fast. Netflix’s live-action ‘One Piece’ proved that a beloved manga could survive the jump to live action without losing its soul, and that success has reignited interest in bringing other shonen giants to the screen.
For years, one particular adaptation has lingered in development limbo, teased and delayed so many times that fans mostly stopped holding their breath. That project is the long-gestating live-action ‘Naruto‘ film, which has been quietly waiting for its moment since Lionsgate first acquired the rights over a decade ago.
That wait appears to be ending. The live-action ‘Naruto’ movie is officially in pre-production, and a global casting search has now begun to fill the roles of Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura, the three young ninjas who make up the iconic Team 7.
The announcement came directly from director Destin Daniel Cretton, best known for helming ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ and the upcoming ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’ Cretton shared the news alongside Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto, marking the first major public step for the project in more than two years.
Casting will begin with the core trio of Team 7 before expanding to supporting roles, according to the official announcement. Cretton has been attached to the project since 2024 as both writer and director, though his commitments to the Marvel Cinematic Universe kept the adaptation on the back burner while he finished ‘Wonder Man’ and prepared ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ for its July 31 release.
Cretton expressed genuine excitement about finally moving forward, saying that Kishimoto’s stories have inspired generations of fans around the world and calling it an honor to bring his world and characters to the big screen in live action for the very first time, according to the official announcement. He also described himself as thrilled to kick off the worldwide search for the actors who will anchor the franchise going forward.
Kishimoto himself seemed just as stunned by how far the project has come, describing the experience as a string of miracles and admitting he still could not quite believe his manga was becoming a real Hollywood movie under Cretton’s direction. His enthusiasm mirrors the cautious optimism many longtime fans have expressed now that a filmmaker with genuine action pedigree is steering the ship.
The stakes here are enormous. ‘Naruto’ has printed more than 250 million copies across over 60 countries, making it one of the best-selling manga franchises in history, and any misstep in casting or tone risks alienating a fanbase that has waited decades to see these characters brought to life outside of animation.
How are you feeling about the live-action Naruto movie now that casting for Team 7 is underway?
Cretton’s track record gives the project some credibility that past attempts lacked. His work on ‘Shang-Chi’ demonstrated a genuine understanding of how to blend grounded emotional stakes with large-scale martial arts choreography, which is exactly the balance ‘Naruto’ will need if it wants to avoid the fate of earlier failed anime adaptations.
The production team behind the film includes producers Avi Arad, Ari Arad, and Emmy Yu working through Arad Productions alongside Jeremy Latcham, with Cretton also producing through his own company. That combination of anime adaptation veterans and a proven blockbuster director has given the announcement a level of buzz that previous ‘Naruto’ movie updates simply never generated.
Online reaction has been a predictable mix of cautious hope and outright skepticism. Some fans are excited to see a director with real action filmmaking chops finally take the reins, while others remain wary about condensing such a sprawling, arc heavy story into a single feature film without losing what made the original manga and anime so beloved.
There is also the practical question of scope. ‘Naruto’ spans hundreds of chapters and countless story arcs, and figuring out which chunk of that mythology to adapt first will likely shape how audiences receive the finished film. For now, though, the focus is squarely on finding the actors who can convincingly step into the shoes of Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura.
With Cretton juggling this project alongside the release of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ later this month, it remains to be seen how quickly the casting process will move or when fans might get their first look at who will lead Team 7 into live action.
