Andy Serkis has given fans a new update on the highly anticipated ‘The Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum,’ and one of the biggest talking points is the return of Middle-earth’s most famous characters.

While details about the upcoming film remain limited, Serkis revealed that production is now moving forward in New Zealand and shared his excitement about working with both familiar faces and new additions, including Jamie Dornan as a young Aragorn.

Speaking with Variety, Serkis confirmed that filming has officially started after the team spent years preparing the project. The actor, who returns as Gollum while also directing the movie, said being back in New Zealand with longtime collaborators Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens has been a special experience.

“We’ve literally just completed a week. We’re finally up and running, so it’s great. It’s really exciting,” Serkis told Variety.

The film marks Serkis’ first time directing a full Middle-earth movie, although he previously worked as a second unit director on all three ‘The Hobbit’ films. He is now stepping into a much larger role, balancing his responsibilities behind the camera while once again using motion capture technology to bring Gollum to life.

One of the biggest questions surrounding ‘The Hunt For Gollum’ has been how the movie will handle returning characters. The story is expected to explore events between ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord Of The Rings’ trilogy, giving fans a closer look at Gollum’s journey before the events of the original films.

Serkis was asked about seeing new actors take on iconic roles, including Jamie Dornan playing a younger version of Aragorn, originally portrayed by Viggo Mortensen. While he did not reveal many details about the character’s role in the story, he praised Dornan’s performance.

“I’ve got to say, Jamie’s doing extremely well. He’s fantastic,” Serkis said.

The casting of a young Aragorn has been one of the most talked-about parts of the movie, as the character is one of the most beloved heroes in fantasy movie history. Fans have been curious to see how the film will explore Aragorn before he became the king and warrior audiences met in the original trilogy.

Serkis also teased that the movie will combine classic filmmaking techniques with modern technology. While he has embraced new tools throughout his career, he said the goal for ‘The Hunt For Gollum’ is to bring back practical filmmaking methods, including miniatures and detailed effects.

“One of the things that I really wanted to do with this film was to bring back all of the great filmmaking skills, from miniatures to prosthetics and marry them up,” Serkis explained.

The director also discussed the future of artificial intelligence in filmmaking, but made it clear that it will not replace traditional performances in the new Lord of the Rings film. He believes the emotional connection created by actors is something technology cannot fully copy.

‘The Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum’ is scheduled to arrive in theaters in 2027, nearly 25 years after Peter Jackson’s original trilogy changed fantasy filmmaking forever. With Serkis leading the project and new actors joining familiar faces, expectations are already high for another journey into Middle-earth.
