Andy Serkis Reveals His Favorite Christopher Nolan Movie — And Fans May Be Surprised
Andy Serkis has revealed which Christopher Nolan movie stands above the rest for him, and his answer may surprise many fans of the director.
During a recent interview with Variety, Serkis said his favorite Nolan film is not one of the director’s biggest box office hits like Oppenheimer, Interstellar, or The Dark Knight. Instead, he picked The Prestige, the mystery drama starring Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman.
Serkis, who appeared in the movie alongside legendary musician and actor David Bowie, spoke very positively about the film and admitted it is one of the few projects of his that he actually enjoys watching again.
“I actually really love watching that film,” Serkis said during the interview. “There are very few films that I’m kind of comfortable watching that I’m in. I do think it is one of my favorite films actually. Plus I got to work with David Bowie, of course!”
Released in 2006, “The Prestige” tells the story of two rival magicians whose obsession with beating each other slowly destroys their personal lives. The film follows Robert Angier, played by Jackman, and Alfred Borden, played by Bale, as their competition becomes darker and more dangerous over time.
Serkis played Mr. Alley, the assistant to inventor Nikola Tesla, who was portrayed by Bowie in one of his most memorable acting performances.
Even though “The Prestige” is now seen as one of Nolan’s strongest movies by many fans, it did not receive the same level of attention as some of the director’s later films. Movies like “Oppenheimer,” “Inception,” and “The Dark Knight” became major cultural events and earned huge box office numbers, awards recognition, and critical praise around the world.

At the time of its release, “The Prestige” performed more quietly. According to industry numbers, the film earned around $109 million worldwide against a reported budget of about $40 million. Compared to Nolan’s later blockbusters, those numbers looked small, but the movie was still considered profitable.
Critics were generally positive about the film when it first came out, though reactions were not as overwhelming as they would later become for Nolan’s future projects. The movie currently holds solid review scores from both critics and audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, critics gave it a 77% score, while audiences rated it much higher with a 92% audience score from hundreds of thousands of viewers. Metacritic also gave the film a respectable score of 66.
Many reviewers praised the film’s smart writing, dark atmosphere, and strong performances from Bale and Jackman. Critics also highlighted Nolan’s direction and the film’s layered storytelling, especially its ending, which became one of the movie’s biggest talking points.
Over the years, “The Prestige” has grown into something of a fan favorite among Nolan’s filmography. Many viewers now see it as one of his most underrated projects because of its emotional story, complicated themes, and shocking twists.
The movie also stood out because it arrived during an interesting period in Nolan’s career. It was released between Batman Begins and “The Dark Knight,” before Nolan became known for making massive blockbuster films with enormous budgets.
Today, “The Prestige” continues to gain appreciation from audiences, and Serkis’ recent comments have once again started conversations online about whether the film deserves more recognition among Christopher Nolan’s best work.
