Armie Hammer Was Reportedly “In Tears” After Watching ‘Citizen Vigilante’ and Seeing How “Hateful” It Became
Armie Hammer reportedly had a much different reaction to Citizen Vigilante than many people expected after finally seeing the finished film. The actor stars in the controversial thriller directed by Uwe Boll, but according to a report from Puck newsletter writer Matthew Belloni, Hammer was shocked by the final version and did not expect the movie to take the direction it did.
The film became a major topic of discussion after its release, especially after Germany blocked its distribution over concerns about its political themes and messaging. The story follows Hammer’s character, a wealthy American businessman who decides to take justice into his own hands and targets criminal migrants in Europe.
Despite the controversy, the movie gained attention online after Elon Musk shared the full film on X for a limited time. It later became available on Amazon Prime in the United States and quickly climbed to the top spot on the platform.
However, behind the scenes, Hammer was reportedly unhappy with what he saw. According to a source connected to Hammer’s team who spoke with Belloni, the actor became emotional after watching the completed movie for the first time.
“The first time he saw it, he was in tears,” the source claimed. “He called me and said, ‘F**k. This is hateful, disgusting.’”
The reaction surprised some viewers because Hammer had chosen to return to acting through a project that already carried a lot of controversy. The film marked one of his first major roles after years away from Hollywood following allegations of sexual assault, emotional abuse, and disturbing private messages that were publicly revealed. Hammer has denied some of the allegations.

Many assumed Hammer understood exactly what kind of movie he was making, but the new report suggests that he may not have fully known how the final project would turn out.
Part of the issue appears to have been Uwe Boll’s unusual filmmaking style. The director is known for working with shorter treatments instead of traditional full-length scripts. Hammer previously discussed the process in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, explaining that he was surprised by the limited material he received.
“I was like, ‘Where’s the rest?’” Hammer said, describing his conversation with Boll. He then recalled Boll’s response as, “No, no, no! Ve just go and shoot and have fun. Ve vant you to be great!”
Hammer also admitted during that interview that he was eager to return to acting after his career struggles, saying he “would have done a f**ing cat food commercial.”*
Because of that desperation to work again, Hammer may have accepted the role without knowing all the details of the final movie. The source who spoke with Belloni said Hammer understood the project had a political angle but did not expect the finished product to be as extreme as it became.
“I think he knew it certainly leaned toward the right, but Uwe works in a very frantic way,” the source said. “When he saw the final product, he was, ‘That was not the movie I thought we made,’ and he freaked the f**k out.”

The report also claimed Hammer earned around $250,000 for the role. While he was reportedly unhappy with the movie, the source suggested that he could still return for a potential sequel if the financial offer was high enough. “It would have to be life-changing money. Everyone has a breaking point,” the source said.
For now, Citizen Vigilante remains one of the most debated films of Hammer’s comeback attempt, with the actor’s reported reaction adding another unexpected chapter to the movie’s already controversial story.
