Armie Hammer’s return to acting has reached another milestone as his new film, Citizen Vigilante, has secured a wider international release.

According to Variety, Quiver Distribution has acquired worldwide distribution rights for the action thriller, although the deal does not include the United Kingdom, German-speaking territories, South Korea, or Taiwan. The company had already released the film in North America on June 19 and is now expanding its reach to more audiences around the world.

The project has attracted attention not only because it marks one of Hammer’s biggest roles since his career stalled amid controversy, but also because of an unexpected boost from Elon Musk.

Musk shared the entire movie for free on X for 48 hours, making it available to millions of users on the platform. The move generated significant attention online and introduced the film to a much larger audience than many independent productions typically receive.

Director Uwe Boll said he was surprised when he learned Musk wanted to share the movie. “He contacted my U.S. podcast, but not me directly,” Boll told Variety. “I thought that it must be a parody account… I mean, you’re not really thinking that he would contact you, but then it turned out it was true.”

Boll explained that the communication happened quickly and that Musk asked for permission before posting the film. “Basically, yes,” Boll said when asked whether Musk had requested approval. Although making the movie available for free may have reduced some potential earnings, Boll believes the publicity may prove just as valuable in the long run.

“There is, of course, a good and a bad side of the X posting,” he said. “The question you have to evaluate is: Is that bringing more money in the end, or is that costing me a lot of money?”

The director added that independent films rarely receive this level of worldwide attention without spending enormous amounts on marketing.

Boll also explained that the film faced challenges finding international distributors before Musk’s involvement. He said it had not yet received a rating in the United Kingdom and had been denied a rating in Germany, making worldwide distribution difficult.

“It felt a little like: No, we should, for a short time at least, give this movie to the world,” Boll said.

According to the director, Citizen Vigilante has earned roughly $600,000 so far through digital platforms such as iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, and Fandango. While the film still has a long way to go before recovering its estimated $2 million budget, Boll already hopes to make a sequel.

He revealed that he would like to continue the story next year and suggested that the main character could travel to another country in the follow-up. “When you make a successful movie, you always hope that you can make a second part,” Boll said.

The filmmaker also believes Armie Hammer would be interested in returning for another installment. “I think he would be happy to do it,” Boll said, although Variety noted that Hammer’s representatives had not confirmed whether the actor would reprise the role.

Citizen Vigilante has received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics.

Despite the divided critical response, the movie continues to generate conversation as Hammer attempts to rebuild his acting career and Citizen Vigilante expands into more international markets.
