‘Avengers: Endgame’ Is Back in Theaters, and It Might Just Beat Every New Movie This Weekend

Seven years is a long time in Hollywood, long enough for entire franchises to rise, fade, and reboot. Yet somehow, one of the biggest movies ever made just walked back into theaters like it never left.

That kind of staying power isn’t something every re-release can claim, especially when it’s competing against a crowded slate of brand-new titles. This weekend’s box office is proving that nostalgia, done right, can still outmuscle the competition.

‘Avengers: Endgame’ returned to theaters as ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore,’ and early estimates have it pulling in somewhere between $25 million and $28 million domestically, putting it in serious contention for the number one spot. That’s a remarkable haul for a seven-year-old film going up against several new wide releases.

The re-release opened Friday with $11.2 million from 3,060 locations, according to studio estimates, while global weekend projections have climbed north of $85 million. Combined with its original theatrical haul of $2.812 billion, that puts ‘Endgame’ within striking distance of a $2.9 billion lifetime cume.

‘Endgame Encore’ wasn’t the only major title fighting for attention this weekend, facing off against Zach Cregger’s ‘Resident Evil’ reboot, Brad Pitt’s survival thriller ‘Heart of the Beast,’ A24’s ‘Primetime,’ and the animated family film ‘Forgotten Island.’ ‘Resident Evil’ had topped the previous weekend with a franchise-best $61 million debut, making it the re-release’s most direct threat for the top spot.

Even against that lineup, ‘Endgame’ has managed to hang near the top of the charts, with some tracking estimates putting its weekend total as high as $28 million. That range would put it neck and neck with ‘Resident Evil’s’ sophomore weekend numbers, setting up a genuinely close finish between a brand-new franchise entry and a film that first hit theaters in 2019.

Part of what’s driving audiences back is the version of ‘Endgame’ now playing, which includes a modified ending and new post-credits footage designed to tee up ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ this December. Directed once again by Anthony and Joe Russo, the tweaked cut gives longtime fans a reason to revisit the finale even if they’ve already seen it multiple times.

The re-release is part of Disney’s newly launched Infinity Vision initiative, which has already certified 75 premium large-format theaters in the United States and 300 internationally for enhanced presentations. Disney reportedly received more than 7,500 applications from exhibitors hoping to get their screens certified for the program by late June, showing just how much industry interest surrounds this rollout.

That level of enthusiasm lines up with the bigger picture surrounding ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ which unites much of the franchise’s ensemble cast when it opens on December 18. Given how competitive this weekend’s box office already is, ‘Endgame’s’ strong return suggests Marvel fans are more locked in than ever heading into the next chapter.

For context, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ remains the second-highest-grossing movie in history worldwide, trailing only ‘Avatar’s’ $2.9 billion global total. A strong encore run could inch it closer to, or even past, that number before its theatrical footprint closes out for good.

Whatever the final tally ends up being this weekend, the fact that a seven-year-old film is even competing for the top spot against a crop of new releases says a lot about the movie’s staying power. It also signals that Marvel’s marketing machine, and the fanbase behind it, is fully locked in ahead of December’s biggest crossover event yet.

Will Avengers: Endgame Encore take the #1 spot this weekend?
