‘Avengers: Endgame’ Re-Release Closes In on Historic Reissue Record After Strong Friday Opening
Marvel’s gamble on bringing ‘Avengers: Endgame‘ back to theaters has spent the past week generating exactly the kind of box office chatter Disney was hoping for, with the re-release consistently outperforming expectations at every checkpoint. What started as a strong Thursday preview number has now carried directly into a genuinely competitive opening day, setting up a real showdown against one of the biggest re-release benchmarks in modern box office history.
That benchmark belongs to ‘Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith,’ whose 2025 20th anniversary re-release has served as the primary comparison point for Marvel’s own theatrical return. Given how competitive that comparison has already proven across previews and presales, industry watchers have been closely tracking every new data point as the weekend plays out.
‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ grossed 11.2 million dollars on its Friday reopening day, according to figures shared by box office analyst Luiz Fernando, a strong result that includes 3.8 million dollars from Thursday previews. That total landed just below ‘Revenge of the Sith’s own 11.4 million dollar opening day, though Fernando noted the Star Wars re-release had actually posted higher previews the night before, making Endgame’s overall Friday performance somewhat more front-loaded by comparison.

With Friday numbers now in, Fernando is projecting a three-day opening weekend somewhere between 22 million dollars and 25 million dollars for the re-release. That range would place ‘Endgame Encore’ among the five biggest reopening weekends ever recorded for a theatrical reissue, positioning it between two other high-profile comparisons: ‘Revenge of the Sith’s 25.5 million dollar 2025 rerelease and the 2012 3D reissue of ‘The Phantom Menace,’ which brought in 22.5 million dollars.
That kind of company puts ‘Endgame’ in rare territory. The film would join ‘The Lion King’s 30.2 million dollar 2011 3D re-release and ‘A New Hope’s’ 35.9 million dollar 1997 rerelease among the biggest reopening weekends of all time, while comfortably surpassing both the 17.3 million dollar haul from ‘Titanic’s 2012 15th anniversary re-release and ‘Avatar’s’ more modest 10.5 million dollar return in 2022.
Deadline’s own weekend estimates have painted a similarly strong picture, projecting the re-release could ultimately land between 23 million dollars and 26 million dollars domestically across 3,060 theaters, a range that would push the film’s overall lifetime domestic cume as high as 884.3 million dollars by the end of the weekend.
The re-release isn’t operating in a vacuum. This particular weekend has turned into an unusually strong late-September frame overall, with four different films tracking toward 20 million dollars or more individually, a rare feat for a period of the calendar that typically sees softer turnout. Sony’s ‘Resident Evil’ remains a genuine competitor in its second weekend, while newcomers ‘Primetime’ and ‘Heart of the Beast’ are both carving out solid debuts of their own.

Even with that competition, ‘Endgame’s’ consistent outperformance against its own historical benchmarks suggests Marvel’s strategy of pairing the re-release with exclusive ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ footage is resonating exactly as intended. Whether the film ultimately claims a top-five all-time reissue spot will come down to how Saturday and Sunday numbers play out, but Friday’s results have already validated much of the pre-release hype building around the rollout.
With the re-release also chasing ‘Avatar’s’ all-time global box office crown in the background, every strong domestic and international data point carries added significance beyond just this single weekend’s rankings.
