Billie Eilish Is Almost Unrecognizable in New Set Photos from Her Movie Debut ‘The Bell Jar’

Musicians making the leap to serious dramatic acting has become something of a rite of passage in Hollywood, though few transitions carry quite as much literary weight as adapting one of the twentieth century’s most haunting novels. That’s exactly the challenge facing one of pop music’s biggest stars as she steps fully into her first lead film role.

The transformation required for that role has fans doing a double take this week, as new images have surfaced offering the clearest look yet at just how deeply the singer has immersed herself in character. For an artist known primarily for her distinctive style both on and off stage, the shift is proving to be a genuinely striking one.

Billie Eilish appeared nearly unrecognizable in new set photos from Sarah Polley’s adaptation of ‘The Bell Jar,’ currently filming in Toronto. The images show Eilish dressed in a red round-neck top paired with a red checkered skirt, fully embodying the 1950s aesthetic of Sylvia Plath’s iconic protagonist, Esther Greenwood.

Eilish is taking on the lead role in what marks her first major feature film acting role, following an earlier appearance in the 2023 Amazon series ‘Swarm.’ The production, backed by Focus Features, has been shooting on location in Toronto since late June and is expected to continue filming through early September.

Academy Award winner Sarah Polley is writing and directing the adaptation, marking her fifth feature as a filmmaker following acclaimed projects including ‘Women Talking,’ ‘Stories We Tell,’ ‘Away From Her,’ and ‘Take This Waltz.’ Polley won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for ‘Women Talking’ in 2023, making her return to the director’s chair for this project one of the more anticipated literary adaptations on the horizon.

‘The Bell Jar,’ originally published in 1963, chronicles Esther Greenwood’s descent into mental illness while grappling with the intense societal expectations placed on young women during the 1950s. The novel is widely considered semi-autobiographical, drawing heavily from Plath’s own experiences before her death shortly after the book’s original release.

Joining Eilish in the cast is Carey Mulligan, reportedly cast as Mrs. Greenwood, Esther’s mother, along with Connor Storrie in the rumored role of Buddy Willard. The film is being produced by Joy Gorman Wettels through her Joy Coalition banner, alongside Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment and StudioCanal.

This isn’t the first attempt to bring Plath’s novel to the screen in recent years. An earlier version of the project had been in development with Kirsten Dunst attached to direct and Dakota Fanning set to star, though that iteration ultimately fell apart before production could move forward.

For Eilish, the role represents a significant creative pivot after years of dominating the music industry as a ten-time Grammy winner and two-time Oscar winner for her original songwriting work. The singer has also been expanding into filmmaking more broadly, recently co-directing a concert tour documentary alongside James Cameron.

With ‘The Bell Jar’ currently eyeing a 2027 release, fans will have to wait a while longer to see how Eilish’s dramatic debut translates to the big screen, though these early glimpses suggest she’s fully committed to disappearing into the role.
