The next and second-to-last movie set in DC Extended Universe, ‘Blue Beetle,’ is set to hit theaters in less than a month. However, the projections for its commercial result aren’t looking favorable at all. After the commercial flops of ‘Black Adam,’ ‘Shazam Fury of the Gods’ and ‘The Flash,’ it looks like WB and DC Studios can already gear up for another commercial failure, and let’s not forget that actors aren’t allowed to promote the movie or attend red carpet events during the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.

The ‘Blue Beetle’ movie has been in development for a few years now. It was initially announced as a streaming movie for HBOMax, along with ‘Batgirl.’ However, Batgirl was canceled last year, and ‘Blue Beetle’ was switched to regular theatrical release, which is set to begin on August 18.

The movie was mainly developed before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as CEOs of DC Studios, but Gunn still confirmed that Xolo Maridueña’s character is the first superhero of his DCU, even though the movie is officially set in DC Extended Universe, which will officially conclude with year with ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.’

Susan Sarandon talks about Victoria Kord, the movie’s main villain!

From what we’ve seen in the previous two trailers, ‘Blue Beetle’ will feature multiple villains, and one of them is Victoria Kord, the original villain that doesn’t exist in the source material. During the pre-production, some reports said that Sharon Stone, who starred as the main villain in 2004’s ‘Catwoman,’ would play the role before it was officially announced that Susan Sarandon joined the movie.

Judging by the trailer, Sarandon will play a corporate villain who wants to take the Blue Beetle Scarab for her evil plan. Now, thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we have some new teases about the character that Sarandon provided (before the SAG-AFTRA strike began).

“My character’s really the one who’s driving that charade in order to get wealth and uranium and what other natural resources under the guise of making the world safe for democracy. That rang a bell. All of those themes I thought would really be fun to dabble in.

She’s a woman who is very smart and was dedicated to the family business, and then the father gives it to the son, which is a huge shock. On top of that, the son is very irresponsible and basically destroys the fortune that has been built, and then just disappears, leaving her to put the business to sleep. Then she builds it back, but with great resentment because she’s been passed over.

She has no family, she has no friends. She’s not interested in anything but Kord Industries. She doesn’t shop, she doesn’t hang out with her girlfriends. She doesn’t have a lover; if she does, it’s nobody important. So, everything has gone towards the building of power.”

Xolo Maridueña, the Star of DC’s ‘Blue Beetle’, Shares Important Updates on the Film

‘Blue Beetle’ stars ‘Cobra Kai’ star Xolo Maridueña in the titular role, with Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, and George Lopez in supporting roles, and Susan Sarandon plays Victoria Kord, the movie’s main villain.

Although there have been some reports that WB considered delaying the movie due to the ongoing strikes in Hollywood, the idea was ultimately abandoned because, let’s face it, WB and DC certainly cannot wait to put DCEU in the past and then start focusing on building the whole thing again with James Gunn’s DCU, which starts with ‘Superman: Legacy’ in July 2025.

Directed by Angel Manuel Soto, Blue Beetle is set to be released on August 18, 2023.
