Blumhouse and Atomic Monster Just Crossed a Massive $1 Billion Box Office Milestone in 2026

Horror has quietly become one of the biggest box office stories of the year, and no studio has capitalized on that shift quite like Blumhouse Atomic Monster. Jason Blum and James Wan’s combined banner has spent 2026 proving that scary movies made for pocket change can still dominate multiplexes packed with far pricier franchise fare.

That success has been building for months, powered by a string of low-budget horror titles that kept punching well above their weight class. From an eerie liminal-space thriller to a possessed-teen chiller, the label’s slate has consistently outperformed expectations at a time when several bigger studio releases have struggled to connect.

Now that success has reached a genuine milestone. Blumhouse Atomic Monster horror films, including ‘Obsession,’ ‘Backrooms,’ ‘Insidious: Out of the Further,’ and ‘Lee Cronin’s The Mummy,’ have collectively grossed more than $1 billion at the global box office so far this year. The studio flew past that mark this past weekend, powered largely by the $60 million global opening of ‘Insidious: Out of the Further,’ the label’s fourth horror release of 2026.

‘Obsession’ has emerged as the breakout hit of that group. The film just crossed $501.6 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing release in Blumhouse Atomic Monster’s history, and Focus Features’ as well, dethroning ‘Conjuring: The Last Rites,’ which had previously topped out at $499.2 million. Written and directed by 26-year-old Curry Barker, ‘Obsession’ was made for just $750,000, meaning it has now returned more than 650 times its original budget.

That kind of return puts ‘Obsession’ in rare company. It’s now the lowest-budgeted horror film to top the North American box office since ‘Paranormal Activity’ back in 2009, a comparison that carries extra weight given Blum’s own history producing that franchise. The film’s rise has also made it the highest-grossing movie ever acquired out of a film festival by a distributor, according to Deadline’s reporting.

‘Obsession’ isn’t carrying the billion-dollar milestone alone. ‘Backrooms,’ adapted by 20-year-old director Kane Parsons from his own YouTube creepypasta series, has grossed $396.5 million worldwide and become A24’s highest-grossing release ever at the global box office. Meanwhile, ‘Lee Cronin’s The Mummy’ has added $90.5 million to the tally, rounding out a slate that four films combined were produced for just $50.75 million total, a roughly 20-times return on investment within the first eight months of the year alone.

This marks the second time Blumhouse Atomic Monster has crossed the billion-dollar threshold since the two companies formally merged in 2024. Counting the labels’ combined grosses even before that merger, it’s actually the third time in four years that Blumhouse and Atomic Monster titles have topped $1 billion collectively in a single year, following a similarly strong 2023 that saw hits like ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s,’ ‘M3GAN,’ and ‘The Exorcist: Believer’ carry the banner past that same mark.

The pattern speaks to a broader strategy that’s paid off repeatedly for the studio: back young, distinctive filmmaking voices with tight budgets and let word of mouth do the heavy lifting. With ‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ still fresh in theaters and more genre titles reportedly on the way, Blumhouse Atomic Monster looks poised to keep that formula running well into the rest of the year.

For a genre that’s often dismissed as an afterthought next to blockbuster tentpoles, this kind of billion-dollar haul on shoestring budgets is a reminder of just how profitable horror can be when it connects.
