Fans of Mortal Kombat no longer need to head to theaters to watch the franchise’s latest chapter. Just four weeks after its big-screen debut, Mortal Kombat II has officially arrived on digital platforms, giving audiences a chance to watch the action-packed sequel from home.

Wiewers can rent the movie for $19.99 or purchase it for $24.99. Those who rent the film will have 48 hours to finish watching it once playback begins. Fans who decide to buy the movie digitally will also gain access to bonus content, including a feature that takes a closer look at the history of the Mortal Kombat gaming franchise with series co-creator Ed Boon.

The quick digital release gives the film another opportunity to reach viewers after a mixed theatrical run. While Mortal Kombat II has attracted plenty of attention from longtime fans of the video game series, the movie has faced strong competition at the box office from several other high-profile releases.

The sequel continues the story that began in the 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot. This time, the focus shifts to the long-awaited tournament between Earthrealm and Outworld. The fate of both worlds hangs in the balance as fighters prepare for a brutal showdown against the forces of Shao Kahn.

Several familiar faces return for the sequel, with much of the cast from the previous film reprising their roles. The movie also introduces some major new characters. Adeline Rudolph joins the franchise as Kitana, while Karl Urban takes on the role of Johnny Cage, one of the most popular characters in Mortal Kombat history.

Many critics and fans have responded more positively to Mortal Kombat II than they did to the first film. Some reviewers have suggested that director Simon McQuoid embraced the over-the-top nature of the video game series more fully this time around. The larger fights, bigger characters, and more playful tone appear to have connected better with audiences who wanted the film to feel closer to the games.

Despite the improved reception, the movie has faced challenges at the box office. Recent reports show that Mortal Kombat II has earned more than $128 million worldwide. While that is a respectable total, it has been competing against several successful releases, including The Devil Wears Prada 2 and popular horror titles such as Obsession and Backrooms.

The future of the franchise may already be taking shape. Screenwriter Jeremy Lin previously revealed during New York Comic Con that work on a script for a third movie is underway. However, an official announcement for Mortal Kombat III has not yet been made. Industry observers believe Warner Bros. will likely evaluate the sequel’s overall financial performance before making a final decision.

Fans also have more viewing options on the way. According to reports, Mortal Kombat II is expected to arrive on HBO Max later this year, although Warner Bros. has not announced an exact streaming date. If the studio follows a similar release schedule to the previous film, subscribers could see the movie added to the platform sometime in early August.

Physical media collectors will not have to wait much longer either. The film is scheduled to receive DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD releases later this summer.

For now, Mortal Kombat fans can revisit the tournament from the comfort of home as the sequel continues its journey beyond theaters and prepares for its next chapter in the franchise.
