Canceled Too Soon? ‘The Acolyte’ Finds New Life on Streaming
As Star Wars Day gets closer, many fans are going back to older movies and shows from the franchise. This yearly trend often brings a boost in viewership across the board. This time, one unexpected title is getting a lot of attention again.
The Acolyte, which first released in 2024, is now performing strongly on streaming. Even though it had a mixed reaction during its release and was later canceled, the show has found a new audience. According to data from FlixPatrol, it has spent around 30 days on the domestic Disney+ chart, showing that people are still watching it in large numbers.
The show was created by Leslye Headland and takes place before the Skywalker Saga. It explores a different side of the Star Wars universe and focuses on darker themes. The cast includes Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Dafne Keen, Jodi Turner-Smith, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Manny Jacinto.
When it first came out, critics mostly responded well. The show currently holds a 74% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the audience score is much lower at 19%. This gap is often linked to review-bombing, where users leave negative ratings in large numbers. This has happened to several projects in recent years, especially ones with diverse casts. Other examples include Captain Marvel and Ghostbusters: Answer the Call.
Despite the attention, The Acolyte did not continue beyond its first season. Lucasfilm said the show did not meet expectations in viewership and also had a very high production cost. Reports suggest the budget was around $230 million.
That number is high, but it is not unusual for Star Wars projects. For comparison, Andor reportedly cost about $650 million for two seasons. The Rise of Skywalker also had a very large budget, close to $500 million.
The renewed interest in The Acolyte comes at a time when the Star Wars franchise is expanding again. A new film, The Mandalorian and Grogu, is on the way and will be the first Star Wars movie in several years. On the TV side, the franchise has already grown with shows like Andor, Ahsoka, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and The Mandalorian. Another project, Star Wars: Starfighter, is also planned, with Shawn Levy directing and Ryan Gosling in the lead role.
Even though The Acolyte had a difficult start and did not continue, its current success shows that audience interest can change over time. Streaming platforms often give shows a second chance to reach viewers who may have missed them earlier.
This situation shows how early reactions do not always reflect long-term interest. A show can struggle at first but still find its audience later. It also raises questions about how much weight should be given to online ratings. What do you think about The Acolyte’s comeback? Do you think it deserved another season?
