‘Chicago P.D.’ Season 14 Episode 2 Recap and Ending Explained: Atwater’s Farewell Takes a Bullet, a Tragedy and a Ticket to Atlanta
Intelligence has said goodbye to plenty of familiar faces over the years, but few exits have felt as personal as the one in this ‘Chicago P.D.‘ recap. The new episode, “Don’t Blink,” aired on October 14 and put one of the show’s longest-serving characters at a crossroads. It was also directed by Jesse Lee Soffer, who played Jay Halstead for a decade before stepping behind the camera.
The season 14 premiere ended with Kevin Atwater rushing to the hospital because his girlfriend, Tasha Fox, was about to give birth. That cliffhanger set up the new hour, which opens with the couple welcoming their newborn son, Malcolm. It quickly becomes clear the episode is about what a new baby does to a cop’s priorities.
That is because “Don’t Blink” is LaRoyce Hawkins’ final episode as Atwater, who has been part of the series since it premiered in 2014. He leaves the unit voluntarily, accepting a police academy teaching job in Atlanta so he can build a life with Tasha and their son. Showrunner Gwen Sigan had said the writers wanted to give him a sendoff he deserved, and the episode plays out on his own terms rather than through tragedy.
Atwater returns from leave and gets a warm welcome from the team. Tasha encourages him to talk to Voight, and Atwater raises his stalled promotion. Voight makes it clear there isn’t much he can do, which stings for a man who wants to provide for his family.
A new robbery pulls the unit back into the field before the conversation can go further. At the scene, Atwater finds a woman’s body in a freezer on the lower level. The building’s manager died trying to escape, which means the crew has escalated from robbery to murder.
A video the victim was recording gives the team a break, and Torres spots construction-related clothing that points toward a young worker named Brennan. His alibi holds up, but the investigation soon shifts to his father, Peter. During the canvass, Atwater also stumbles onto another robbery in progress at an arcade, where one of the masked men returns to help free a trapped victim before fleeing again.
Atwater gets a call from Tasha while talking with Peter at the front desk. She’s at the hospital with the baby, who turns out to have an ear infection that needs antibiotics. Burgess understands the pull between work and home, and a nurse’s comment about the resemblance between father and baby sends Atwater back to the case with a new idea about Peter and his son.
The unit moves on Peter, and the pursuit of his accomplice turns dangerous. A bullet hits Atwater, but his vest saves him. For a farewell episode, the shooting is an obvious source of anxiety, but its real impact comes afterward, when Atwater considers how close he came to leaving his newborn without a father.

Peter initially refuses to name his partner, but Atwater appeals to him as a father. Peter explains that his son stole from a dealer and faced violent consequences unless the debt was repaid. The robberies were his attempt to come up with the money, with help from a man named Steve.
It’s too late, though. Blood and signs of a struggle at his home lead the team to Brennan’s body at a dump site, and Atwater has to tell Peter that his son is dead. Peter’s regret centers on not being there for his child, which mirrors the fear that has been building in Atwater all day.
With Sergeant Nolan about to retire, a promotion becomes possible for Atwater. But he realizes that rank alone won’t give him the family life he wants, and Voight, who recalls the early years with his own son, understands. An opportunity to teach at a police academy in Atlanta offers good pay and more flexibility, and Atwater talks it over with Tasha before the couple agree to the move.
The episode closes with a goodbye for the 21st District. Ruzek leads a toast and Platt makes sure Atwater gets to address the friends who have become his family, and the group sings “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” In his speech, Hawkins’ character thanks the district for being his home for 14 years.

Atwater survives, and the show does not use his exit as an excuse for another tragedy. Critics have said the episode gives him a happy ending with the family he’s always wanted, along with Voight’s blessing. Reviewers also noted that the robbery case itself is more functional than surprising, but the farewell is the real draw.
The next episode, “Under the Surface,” airs October 21 at 10/9c on NBC.
