Marvel Studios has finally put the rumors to rest. Christopher Abbott has been confirmed as Charles Xavier, better known as Professor X, in the upcoming X-Men reboot, with the announcement arriving during Marvel Studios’ D23 presentation on Friday, August 14.

The casting caps off weeks of speculation, and it lands on a name most fans did not see coming. Abbott emerged as a surprise frontrunner for the role after earlier reports had linked Bill Skarsgard and Tom Pelphrey to the part, making his eventual confirmation one of the bigger curveballs of this entire casting cycle.

His filmography since leaving that show reads like a checklist of prestige indie cinema. His credits include ‘James White,’ ‘It Comes at Night,’ ‘Possessor,’ ‘Sanctuary,’ ‘Poor Things’ and ‘Bring Them Down,’ alongside television work on ‘The Sinner’ and ‘Catch-22’. His performance in the latter even earned him serious industry recognition, as Abbott received a Golden Globe nomination for ‘Catch-22,’ starred opposite Emma Stone in Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Poor Things,’ and recently transformed into the title character for Leigh Whannell’s ‘Wolf Man’.

That last credit is worth sitting with for a second. Going from a lycanthropic horror lead to the world’s most famous telepath is not exactly a conventional career jump, but it says a lot about the range Marvel is banking on here.

Interestingly, this is not Abbott’s first rodeo in the wider Marvel sandbox. Abbott previously appeared in Sony’s ‘Kraven the Hunter,’ where he played the Foreigner, making his casting as Professor X one of the more unusual details of this announcement since it means he is now portraying more than one Marvel character across the studio’s expanding superhero universe. That earlier role is not expected to affect the X-Men storyline, particularly because ‘Kraven the Hunter’ belongs to Sony’s Spider-Man universe rather than Marvel Studios’ main MCU continuity.

The Hollywood Reporter had previously written that Abbott and Tom Pelphrey both tested for Xavier, that Pelphrey ultimately did not land the role, and that the decision came down to Abbott or an unnamed dark horse candidate. Some of the surrounding casting news broke in ways nobody predicted either. It’s worth remembering that two other major castings this cycle, Kit Connor landing Cyclops and Emma Frost going to Samara Weaving, both went to actors nobody had floated beforehand. That pattern of defying expectations seems to be something of a theme for this entire reboot.

The elephant in the room for a lot of longtime fans is the age question. Traditionally, this character has skewed older on screen, and the casting makes Abbott the second-youngest actor to portray Professor X after James McAvoy.

That’s a notable shift from the character’s live-action legacy. Abbott becomes the latest actor to take on the character following Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy, who portrayed different generations of Xavier across 20th Century Fox’s ‘X-Men’ franchise, and Patrick Stewart owned the role for 17 years across the Fox era before James McAvoy took over.

Fans hoping for a straightforward, saintly mentor figure might want to temper expectations a bit. Modern comics have complicated Xavier considerably, and casting an actor with Abbott’s edge suggests Marvel is not simply casting a saint this time around. Given the darker, morally murkier version of Charles Xavier that has emerged in recent comic runs, Abbott’s résumé full of tense psychological performances suddenly makes a lot more sense.
