Christopher Nolan Says There’s One Movie Genre He’d Be “Terrified” To Direct

Christopher Nolan has built his career by making some of Hollywood’s biggest and most ambitious films. From science fiction and war dramas to superhero movies and historical epics, he has explored many different genres over the years. But despite that success, there is one type of movie he admits he would be afraid to make.

During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, while promoting his latest film, The Odyssey, Nolan revealed which genre he is terrified of tackling.

Nolan revealed that romantic comedies are something he has no interest in directing because of how difficult they are to get right.

While talking with Fallon, Nolan explained that he has a lot of respect for filmmakers who make audiences laugh. He admitted that creating a successful romantic comedy is much harder than many people realize.

“I think doing a rom-com would be incredibly difficult. I love watching those movies,” Nolan said. “But no, I think people who direct comedy, people who do comedy, I think that’s one of the hardest things in the world to make people laugh that way.”

He went on to explain why comedy feels much riskier to him than the kinds of movies he usually makes. According to Nolan, audiences can have different interpretations of dramatic films, but comedy leaves very little room for that.

“Particularly, the risk they take when you make a film—if I show a film to people and maybe they don’t respond to bits of it, I’m like, ‘Ah, they don’t get it. Whatever.’ There’s no hiding behind that when you do comedy. So, I would be terrified of doing anything like that.”

The comments surprised many fans because Nolan is known for constantly challenging himself with large-scale productions. However, his latest project is about as far away from a romantic comedy as possible.

The Odyssey is an adaptation of Homer’s famous ancient Greek poem. The story follows Odysseus, played by Matt Damon, as he struggles to make his way home after the Trojan War. His journey lasts ten years and is filled with dangerous creatures, impossible challenges, and powerful gods. At home, his wife Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway, and their son Telemachus, played by Tom Holland, continue waiting for his return.

The film also features one of the biggest casts Nolan has ever assembled. Alongside Damon, Hathaway, and Holland, the movie stars Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, Jesse Garcia, Will Yun Lee, Rafi Gavron, Shiloh Fernandez, Mia Goth, Travis Scott, and several others.

According to information shared during Nolan’s interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the filmmaker has no plans to step into the romantic comedy genre anytime soon. Instead, he seems happy to leave those stories to directors who specialize in making audiences laugh.

Even though Nolan called the genre “terrifying,” his comments were also a sign of respect. Rather than dismissing romantic comedies, he praised the people who make them and acknowledged the unique challenge of creating humor that connects with audiences.

For now, Nolan remains focused on the kinds of large-scale stories that have made him one of the most celebrated directors in modern cinema. While fans may never see him direct a romantic comedy, his latest comments show that even one of Hollywood’s biggest filmmakers still has genres that make him nervous.
