Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Cast Might Be the Greatest Ensemble Ever Assembled
Christopher Nolan has spent the better part of two years building toward this exact moment. His sprawling, IMAX-shot adaptation of Homer’s ancient epic has been teased through leaked footage, mysterious set photos, and a rotating cast list that seemed to grow every few months.
The buzz has only intensified as the film’s release date creeps closer, with fans dissecting every trailer frame and casting announcement for clues about how Nolan plans to translate a 2,700 year old poem into a modern theatrical event. Social media has been flooded with speculation about everything from runtime to which mythological creatures made the final cut.
Now the wait for a proper cast reunion is over. Nolan stepped out in London on Sunday alongside a large group of his ‘The Odyssey‘ cast and crew for an official photo call ahead of the film’s world premiere, giving fans their first real look at the ensemble gathered together in one place.
Producer Emma Thomas and star Zendaya were among those photographed arriving at the event, marking one of the first big public moments of the film’s promotional rollout in the United Kingdom.
The gathering comes just one day before ‘The Odyssey’ is set to hold its world premiere in London on July 6. From there, the film heads into a wide theatrical release through Universal Pictures on July 17 in both the United States and the United Kingdom, arriving in IMAX 70mm, standard 70mm, 35mm, and several other premium large formats.
‘The Odyssey’ reimagines Homer’s foundational text as a mythic action epic, following Odysseus on his long and dangerous journey home after the Trojan War. Along the way he crosses paths with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the alluring Sirens, and the nymph Calypso, all while his wife Penelope fends off suitors back in Ithaca who assume he is never coming home.
Matt Damon leads the film as Odysseus, with Anne Hathaway playing Penelope and Tom Holland stepping into the role of their son Telemachus. Zendaya rounds out the central family dynamic in a sense, playing the goddess Athena, who has long served as Odysseus’s divine protector throughout the mythology.
Robert Pattinson plays Antinous, one of the suitors vying for Penelope’s hand, while John Leguizamo appears as Eumaeus, described as one of Odysseus’s most loyal companions. The supporting cast reads like a who’s who of modern film, including Lupita Nyong’o in a dual role as Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra, Charlize Theron as Circe, and Mia Goth as Melantho.
Jon Bernthal, Samantha Morton, Himesh Patel, Elliot Page, Bill Irwin, and Benny Safdie also feature prominently, alongside Josh Stewart, Ryan Hurst, James Remar, Jovan Adepo, Will Yun Lee, and Corey Hawkins in roles that have not all been publicly confirmed. It is one of the largest ensembles Nolan has ever assembled for a single project.
True to Nolan’s reputation, the production leaned heavily on practical filmmaking, shooting across Italy, Greece, Iceland, Morocco, Scotland, Western Sahara, and Malta rather than relying on digital environments. The crew also filmed extensively at real historical locations, including the Castle of Santa Caterina in Sicily and the Moray Firth inlet in Scotland.
The film clocks in at roughly 172 minutes and has been rated R for its intense battle sequences and mythological violence. Universal has also opted to skip early influencer screenings entirely, choosing instead to let traditional critics and audiences experience ‘The Odyssey’ for the first time without a wave of early social media reactions shaping expectations.
That approach has not slowed the hype train in the slightest. Early tracking data has reportedly placed the film in a strong position for its opening weekend, with some industry analysts projecting an opening between eighty and one hundred million dollars domestically, and ‘The Odyssey’ has already been named among the most anticipated films of the second half of the year by multiple award bodies.
With the London premiere now just a day away, all eyes are on how Nolan’s take on one of literature’s oldest stories will land with both critics and longtime fans of the director’s more grounded, practical style of filmmaking.
