Ridley Scott’s latest cinematic swing has been building anticipation for months, and this week the cast finally got to celebrate that momentum in person. “The Dog Stars,” Scott’s post-apocalyptic adaptation of Peter Heller’s 2012 novel, is set to hit UK cinemas on August 28, and its London send-off gave fans their first proper look at the ensemble together on the red carpet.

The film follows Hig, a civilian pilot played by Jacob Elordi, as he navigates a world devastated by a pandemic alongside Bangley, a hardened ex-Marine played by Josh Brolin. Living in a disused aircraft hangar with his dog, Hig’s fragile stability is disrupted when a mysterious radio transmission draws him toward the possibility that other survivors might still exist beyond the safety of his encampment.

Among the cast members turning heads at the premiere was Margaret Qualley, who plays Cima, a young medic and Hig’s love interest, described in official materials as a woman with a tragic past who finds connection with him amid the chaos. Qualley stunned on the red carpet in a floor-length black fringe dress with a plunging V-neckline, styled with her dark hair worn long and loose, and completed the striking look by going barefoot for the occasion.

Qualley’s involvement in the project traces back to earlier reporting on the film’s casting, when she joined alongside Brolin and Guy Pearce to round out the ensemble following Elordi’s casting as the lead. Pearce plays Pops, described as a former Navy SEAL and Cima’s father, adding a family dynamic to the survival story that runs alongside the central relationship between Hig and Cima.

The cast rounds out with Allison Janney as Darlene, an eccentric stewardess encountered in Grand Junction, and Benedict Wong as Aaron, described as the quiet backbone of a hidden Mennonite community struggling to survive in the bleak post-pandemic landscape. That ensemble reflects Scott’s tendency to surround his leads with a deep bench of character actors capable of grounding even the most sprawling survival narratives.

Interestingly, the road to this cast wasn’t entirely straightforward. Paul Mescal was originally attached to star before scheduling conflicts with Sam Mendes’ Beatles anthology films forced him to step aside, ultimately opening the door for Elordi to take on the lead role of Hig instead.

Scott wrote the screenplay adaptation alongside Mark L. Smith, working from Heller’s acclaimed novel about a former pilot living in a Colorado airplane hangar with his dog and a gun-toting companion. The story kicks into motion when Hig, flying his old Cessna, picks up a mysterious transmission that sends him on a search for its source, unsure whether he’ll find hope or further danger waiting at the end of that signal.

Produced through Scott’s own Scott Free Productions alongside Michael Pruss and Cliff Roberts, “The Dog Stars” marks another entry in Scott’s prolific late-career run of ambitious genre filmmaking, following recent works that have kept the 87-year-old director firmly in the awards and box office conversation. The film carries a reported $110 million budget and is being distributed by 20th Century Studios.

With the London premiere now behind them, the cast heads into the film’s wider theatrical rollout with momentum already building around both the story’s bleak, character-driven premise and the star power assembled to bring it to life. Given how much attention Qualley’s premiere look alone generated, expectations for the film itself appear to be running high as its release date approaches.
