Few filmmakers can generate the kind of anticipatory electricity that Christopher Nolan does, and with his adaptation of ‘The Odyssey’ now weeks away, that current is running at full voltage.

The Oscar-winning director behind ‘Oppenheimer’ has spent the better part of a year carefully controlling what audiences know about his sprawling retelling of Homer’s ancient epic, making every new piece of footage feel like a carefully rationed gift. Now, a first behind-the-scenes featurette has arrived online, offering the most intimate look yet at what has been one of cinema’s most closely watched productions.

The featurette, titled “On the Set of The Odyssey,” was posted by The Odyssey Movie’s official account and runs just over a minute. The brief clip gives fans a glimpse at the film’s strikingly realized world, including a shot of Robert Pattinson in full period costume standing on what appears to be a darkly lit set, dressed in layered leather and fur-trimmed armor that signals just how immersive Nolan’s ancient Greek world has been brought to life on screen.

Pattinson portrays Antinous, one of the primary antagonists of the story and the most prominent of the suitors vying for the hand of Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway, while Odysseus is away. The casting places him in direct moral opposition to Matt Damon’s battle-worn hero, a contrast that has fans particularly excited given both actors’ previous collaborations with Nolan.

The production itself has made history in the way it was captured. Nolan revealed on ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ that ‘The Odyssey‘ became the first feature film ever shot entirely on IMAX film cameras, a milestone that required engineering an entirely new camera system weighing around 400 pounds. Previous IMAX cameras were considered too loud for dialogue-heavy scenes, prompting IMAX to develop brand-new models that are both quieter and lighter than their predecessors.

The scale of the undertaking extends to the cast as well. Alongside Damon, the film features Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, and many others, forming one of Nolan’s most star-studded ensembles to date.

Holland, who plays Odysseus’ son Telemachus, has been vocal about the magnitude of the experience, telling GQ Sports that working on the film was “the job of a lifetime, without a doubt” and that he believed “the movie is going to be unlike anything we’ve ever seen.”

Nolan has spoken about the film’s commitment to practical, real-world shooting, telling Empire that he put the cast who portray Odysseus’ crew out on real waves in real locations for four months, wanting to capture just how grueling those ancient journeys would have been.

In a separate interview with Time, the director also addressed online criticism about historical accuracy in the film’s design choices, making clear that every decision was deliberate and thoughtful rather than accidental.

‘The Odyssey’ is written, directed, and produced by Nolan, and arrives in theaters on July 17, 2026. With a behind-the-scenes featurette now stoking the fires ahead of release, the question worth debating is whether this glimpse at Pattinson’s Antinous has you more or less convinced that Nolan has found his perfect villain for this mythic tale.
