Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Is About to Become One of the Highest-Grossing Films Ever
Christopher Nolan has spent decades building a reputation as one of the few directors whose name alone can move box office numbers, but even by his own standards, this year has been something different. With a $600.5 million domestic total against a $250 million production budget, not counting marketing, ‘The Odyssey’ has comfortably cleared its break-even point several times over. Industry trackers now expect the film to cross $1.7 billion within the coming week, a threshold that would place it ahead of ‘Inside Out 2’ and land it among the eleven highest-grossing films in box office history.
The milestone caps off what’s already been a landmark run for Universal Pictures. ‘The Odyssey’ has already overtaken 2015’s ‘Jurassic World’ to become the studio’s highest-grossing release ever, a title that had stood for more than a decade before Nolan’s epic came along.

Nolan’s track record has always suggested audiences trust him to deliver theatrical events worth showing up for, and this latest chapter has only reinforced that reputation on a scale even his previous hits didn’t quite reach.
The film’s staying power is especially notable given how crowded the 2026 release calendar has been. ‘The Odyssey’ has had to hold its ground against a steady stream of major studio tentpoles throughout the summer and into the fall, yet it has continued posting weekend numbers that rival films with far broader four-quadrant appeal.
