Marvel Studios’ latest series, ‘Secret Invasion,’ premiered last Wednesday exclusively on Disney+. We haven’t watched an MCU series since ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’ concluded last October. Marvel Studios decided to rethink its release strategy and give more time between each new series, which also explains why the upcoming series ‘Echo’ will be released all at once to create more free room for other, more important shows that will have a regular release of one episode per week.

‘Secret Invasion’ recently premiered with its first out of six announced episodes, and the first reactions have been mostly positive. However, fans and some artists criticized the studio’s decision to use AI to create the series’ opening sequence. The series sees the return of many known MCU faces, including Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos, Martin Freeman’s Everett K. Ross, Don Cheadle’s James Rhodes, and Cobie Smulders’ Maria Hill.

Following paragraphs contain spoilers for the first episode of ‘Secret Invasion’!

Cobie Smulders talks about her character’s fate in ‘Secret Invasion’

The first episode of the series featured Nick Fury’s return to Earth after Maria Hill, and Talos informed him about the Skrull called Gravik and the group of rebel Skrulls that are trying to infiltrate Earth and use terrorist attacks to initiate a global war that will wipe out humanity and leave only Skrulls on Earth.

Despite the good guy’s effort to stop him, Gravik pulls off the newest attack in Moscow and, disguised as Fury, shoots Maria Hill in the gut. This shocking ending of the first episode has left the fans wondering if this is the last we’re going to see of Cobie Smulders in a role she’s been playing for the last eleven years.

“There is a multiverse now, so anything is possible. But I’m pretty sure this is it. […] It felt, and it feels strange. Maria Hill’s passing is very real, and it’s shocking, and it feels very human. It was a sad day.”

Cobie Smulders first joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2012’s ‘The Avengers,’ where she played Nick Fury’s second in command at SHIELD. She reprised the role in ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ the post-credit scene ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame.’

She also starred as Talos’ wife, Soren, who shapeshifted into Maria Hill in ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home.’ There have been some rumors that Smulder will return in the upcoming movie ‘The Marvels,’ in which Samuel L. Jackson will also return as Nick Fury, but Smulders said she doesn’t know anything about that.

Apart from the MCU, Smulders is also known for the role of Robin Scherbatsky in the CBS sitcom ‘How I Met Your Mother.’ She also played Maria Hill in three episodes of ABC’s ‘Agents of SHIELD,’ and she voiced the character in the Disney+ animated series ‘What If…?’ She’s not unfamiliar with DC roles as well, considering she voiced Wonder Woman in ‘The LEGO Movie’ franchise.
