Courteney Cox Says She’s Ready to Direct a ‘Scream’ Movie

Few actors have a claim to a horror franchise quite like Courteney Cox does to ‘Scream.’ She’s the only performer to appear in every single installment since the original slasher hit theaters back in 1996, giving her a front-row seat to three decades of Ghostface’s evolution, long before most of her current co-stars were even cast.

That deep institutional knowledge has recently found a new creative outlet as well. Cox has been stepping behind the camera lately, most notably with ‘Evil Genius,’ her upcoming directorial effort inspired by the real-life “pizza bomber” case previously chronicled in a Netflix true-crime documentary that’s currently premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival.

While promoting that project at the Deadline Studio during TIFF, Cox was asked directly whether she’d ever want to direct a ‘Scream’ sequel herself, and her answer left little room for doubt. She said, “I think I should, honestly. Nobody knows more about that movie than I do,” while her ‘Evil Genius’ co-stars Patricia Arquette and David Harbour voiced their enthusiastic support nearby, a moment shared in comments reported by Deadline.

Cox went further in making her case, acknowledging that beyond herself, only franchise creator Wes Craven, the writers, and everyone who’s ever appeared in the series could rival her knowledge of the material. She framed the idea as something that would be genuinely fun to pursue, describing it as a good publicity opportunity as much as a creative one, and jokingly telling the assembled press to “get on it.”

While Cox’s enthusiasm for directing came through clearly, her plans for appearing in front of the camera again remain considerably murkier. Speaking separately to The Los Angeles Times about whether she’d reprise her role as Gale Weathers in a potential eighth installment, Cox kept things playfully ambiguous, saying, “I got to play hard to get,” in comments reported by The Los Angeles Times.

That coyness tracks with comments Cox made earlier this year following the release of ‘Scream 7,’ when she expressed uncertainty about whether she’d be able to return for a follow-up while still leaving the door open for Gale’s eventual comeback. Cox most recently reprised the role in ‘Scream 7,’ which reunited her with Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott and marked series writer Kevin Williamson’s directorial debut within the franchise.

Despite holding the franchise’s lowest Rotten Tomatoes score at 30 percent among critics, ‘Scream 7’ still became the highest-grossing sequel in the series, pulling in nearly $208 million globally. That commercial success, paired with the film’s more divisive critical reception, has fueled ongoing speculation about how the franchise might course-correct for its next installment.

Cox’s comments arrive at a particularly opportune moment for the franchise. ‘Scream 8’ currently remains without an officially announced director, and reports suggest behind-the-scenes conversations are already underway as the team figures out its creative direction for the next chapter, leaving an opening that Cox’s remarks seem timed to address directly.

It’s worth noting that Cox’s comments represent an expressed ambition rather than a confirmed deal. No studio has formally hired her to direct a specific ‘Scream’ sequel, and neither Spyglass nor Paramount have commissioned a film built around her directorial vision. Still, her willingness to publicly campaign for the job carries more weight coming from someone with three decades of firsthand experience inside the franchise than it would from an outside candidate simply expressing interest.

With ‘Scream 8’ still searching for its creative direction and Cox actively building out her own directing résumé through ‘Evil Genius,’ the timing of her comments feels far from coincidental. Whether her public campaign ultimately translates into an actual directing credit remains to be seen, but for a franchise still figuring out its next move, Cox has made clear she’s more than willing to step up.
