Curry Barker’s horror film “Obsession” has opened strong at the box office, bringing in an estimated $15 million in its debut weekend for Focus Features. The film’s performance is already sparking talk about what could come next for the story, including a possible sequel or even a larger franchise expansion, especially if it continues to do well on streaming and other platforms.

According to an interview, Barker himself has started thinking about how the world of “Obsession” could continue. The filmmaker also openly discussed a flaw in the movie’s central idea, saying the supernatural concept behind the “One Wish Willow” does not fully add up when looked at closely.

In the film, Michael Johnston plays Bear, a young man who uses a magical object called the “One Wish Willow.” He wishes for his crush Nikki, played by Inde Navarrette, to love him more than anyone else. The wish comes true, but it quickly turns into something dark, obsessive, and violent.

Barker explained in the interview that the idea raises a big question. If a wish-granting object really exists, then the world should be full of chaos from everyone using it. He admitted the logic does not fully hold up in the movie’s world.

“I mean, it’s kind of a plot hole. It’s something I don’t like to think about too much, because it totally doesn’t make sense that there’s a world of people just making wishes,” he said in the Total Film interview.

He also added, “If the One Wish Willow actually works, which it does in this lore, and people are just making wishes left and right, there would be some crazy—like, dragons would exist. And none of that. The world is pretty normal from what we see in this movie. So, it doesn’t really make sense.”

Barker then suggested one possible explanation he has thought about, although he admits it does not fully solve the issue.

“Here’s my take; every time someone makes a wish, they enter into an alternate reality where their wish comes true, so you’re not experiencing everybody’s wish at the same time. And that’s why—but that doesn’t make sense because the money falls from the ceiling. Yeah, it’s broken,” he said.

Despite pointing out the issue, Barker said he is not too worried about it and has even used it as a way to think about expanding the story further.

He mentioned that a sequel is possible, but what interests him more is turning “Obsession” into an anthology style project. In this idea, each new story would focus on a different person using the “One Wish Willow” and facing their own consequences. Each episode or film could explore a new wish and a new kind of horror outcome.

“I obviously have a couple more things that I’m excited about next, but I do see Obsession 2, maybe. Or even what really is exciting to me is maybe an anthology, like a one-hour episode,” Barker said. He added, “Each episode is a different wish that goes completely off the rails. Maybe I’ll direct the pilot with the same DP, and you could invite other filmmakers to kind of give their spin at it. That would be really cool.”

The idea opens the door for a much larger universe built around the same cursed object, with different characters and stories all connected by the same dangerous concept. The film already hints that the “One Wish Willow” may be tied to a deeper force, possibly something supernatural or even demonic, though it never fully explains it.

With its strong opening and growing audience interest, “Obsession” now looks like it could become more than a single movie. Whether it turns into a sequel or an anthology series, Barker’s idea suggests there is still a lot of story left to explore.
