Robert Downey Jr. has never done anything halfway when it comes to promoting his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and his approach to becoming Doctor Doom has been no exception. Since his surprise reveal as the villain back in 2024, Downey has leaned fully into the character’s mystique, showing up to press events draped in green and building genuine anticipation around a role that flips his entire Marvel legacy on its head.

That commitment reached a new level of detail at Comic-Con this past July, when Downey stepped out to promote “Avengers: Doomsday” wearing a custom black suit covered in green inscriptions across the pockets, chest, and cuffs. Unlike his earlier public appearances, this outfit wasn’t just stylish set dressing, it was written entirely in Latverian runes, the fictional language tied to Doctor Doom’s home country in the comics.

That cryptic styling immediately sent fans into detective mode, and the puzzle has now officially been cracked. Using a cipher built from both Downey’s suit and passages spotted at an official “Dom Latveria” coffee pop-up during SXSW, Instagram user @editwithego managed to decode the majority of the suit’s hidden text.

The translation reveals a suit packed with thematic meaning. The passage on Downey’s right-hand pocket spells out “Revenge,” while the left pocket reads “Justice,” two words that speak directly to Doom’s driving motivations heading into the film. The lapel text translates to “There is no promise of tomorrow,” while the inscription running along his cuffs reads “To the victor go the spoils.”

That cuffs line carries an obvious double meaning, functioning as a clever pun on Victor von Doom’s own name while also hinting that Doom emerges triumphant by the film’s end. The lapel phrase, meanwhile, reads as a nod to the character’s tragic backstory, touching on the fragility of life and the losses that have shaped his new worldview, though it could also be read more ominously as a warning that no timeline is truly safe once Doom takes control.

Not every part of the suit gave up its secrets, though. @editwithego noted they were unable to decode one particular passage positioned over Downey’s heart, since two of the runes used don’t appear to exist within the alphabet they’d reconstructed, leaving that specific message a mystery for now.

Marvel has been building out this runic aesthetic across its broader marketing push for “Avengers: Doomsday,” incorporating stained glass patterns and Latverian script into official posters and promotional material well beyond just Downey’s Comic-Con appearance. That consistency suggests the studio is deliberately laying groundwork for future puzzles and Easter eggs tied to Doom’s mythology as the film’s release approaches.

Downey has been candid about how he views the character despite Doom’s villainous reputation, previously making clear that from Doom’s own perspective, his actions in the film are meant to feel heroic rather than purely destructive. That framing adds extra weight to phrases like “justice” and “revenge” appearing so prominently across the suit, suggesting Doom sees himself as settling a score rather than simply wreaking havoc.

“Avengers: Doomsday” is set to hit theaters on December 18, bringing Downey back alongside Chris Hemsworth, Hayley Atwell, Chris Evans, Pedro Pascal, and a sprawling ensemble cast. The film will lead directly into “Avengers: Secret Wars,” closing out the Multiverse Saga.

With one final passage over Downey’s heart still unsolved, fans have plenty of reason to keep digging for whatever remaining clues Marvel has hidden throughout the character’s promotional rollout.

What do you think the final hidden message on Doctor Doom's suit says?
